Summary
Jaime is set to inherit the family business but Tywin demands he produce a successor before he'll pass it over. A business deal puts Jaime at a dinner table with Brienne, the girl who's despised him since the first time they met. Keeping up the pretence for a little while would be better for the both of them though.

Summary
Brienne stalks to him, standing in front of him as he shakes the ash and soot out of his hair and clothes. He looks up to find her standing there, the shock writ heavy across his brows, in the slackening of his jaw. She cups his face, thumbing at the smut on his cheeks.
“Are you okay?”
He blinks several times before a beatific smile spreads across his face. “I am.”
She nods once, decidedly. “Good.”
Then she pulls back and punches him square in his nose.
--A post-8x04 "fix-it" fic. Jaime survives his trip back south and the ensuing battle for King's Landing. Cersei does not. Brienne's trust has been broken, and there's the slight baby-shaped complication from their time in Winterfell.

Maybe it would help him make sense of the mess in his head — it’s been days by now and beyond knowing in his heart, for sure, that the blonde, blue eyed ser lady with blue armor and ruby-hilted sword of his dreams can’t have been made up, he’s only ever had fleeting memories of that island, and every time he looks at his right wrist and the scars left by what feels like straps he feels something deeply wrong settle inside his gut, but he can’t say what. Otherwise he only dreams about that dragon fire or green fire, and a man laughing somewhere far away, and his head hurts whenever he tries to go any farther than that.
He thinks that the ser lady of his dreams must be at least as honorable and brave as Ser Arthur Dayne from those songs. He’s sure that if she saw what he is seeing, she wouldn’t like it. After all, a knight’s duty is to protect the weak and innocent, right? He hasn’t seen much of that lately.
Alternatively: in which Jaime Lannister dies in King's Landing.

Summary
Jaime Lannister, against the odds of his injuries, survives the Red Keep's collapse.
This leaves not only him but many other people to deal with the aftermath of two queens fighting for the Iron Throne and so many losing because of it.
Foremost, it leaves Jaime to deal with his future, a future he thought he wouldn't ever have after what Brandon Stark said to him at Winterfell. And his future may come to affect those of many more people than he ever would have dared to believe. Yet, it leaves him to deal with his past, too. Because he left something behind at Winterfell, something very dear to him, and now that he survived, Jaime has to come to terms with the consequences of his choices.
And a whole nation has to decide on its own future, too.
