She looks briefly at her reflection on the glowing river that comes from somewhere deeper in the caves where they have taken refuge, her lip is split from where she'd taken her and her brother's weight when she fell while being chased through town, the metallic collar that was still sizzling at her skin and boiling the blood from where her knife had slipped towards her skin.

Edit 6/26/24: this fic and all of my rise fics are on hiatus for the forseeable future. I plan to finish it some day but my hyperfixation died :/
