Trinity looked at her a second longer. Then she looked down at the top of Mateo’s head, and she said, very quietly, in the fast conspiratorial voice, “I want this.”
She said it like a finding. Something already true that she was only now reporting.
“I know,” Yolanda said, and found—kneeling on the carpet, eight-year-old on one side, ten-year-old on the other, her mother’s pernil going cold—that she had not actually needed to put it down, any of the times she’d put it down. She’d been carrying it the whole way. She’d just refused to check the weight. “Me too.”

Six months have passed since Garcia broke it off with Santos.
Rumors have a way of floating around a hospital and, rumor has it, Garcia and Al-Hashimi are seeing each other.
Santos doesn't know how to process that, and even less how to process what she sees in a supply closet during shift, and even less how to process the feelings that seem to stubbornly come up whenever she thinks about Yolanda and Baran.
Feelings suck, Yolanda sucks, and Trinity wants nothing more than to curl up and forget-- but two stubborn, dark-haired doctors seemed determined on not letting that happen.

Trinity can feel everything leaching at her, knows she's getting bad again when the nightmares start up after a few blissful months of reprieve, bad enough that she's given up her much coveted space in the middle of the three of them to Baran so when she wakes gasping, she doesn't have to disturb anyone when she slides out of bed. Can feel the insecurity and the anxiety, the very edges of the spiral in her brain beginning to turn, to coalesce into something more insidious.

She thought she had a good thing going with Garcia, but now she feels like she’s fucked that up too. She might be in love with a woman who hates her guts. She feels used. She falls asleep before she sees the two text messages from Garcia.

Cue one tense car ride, several pointed observations, and the long-overdue death of “casual.”

And there her eyes stay.
Because it’s Trinity, sure, of course, but also because she’s swapping spit with some woman, some girl who seems entirely elated by the fact that she’s kissing Trinity Santos—if she even knows her fucking name. Trinity’s hand is in her hair, tugging at the mass of dark curls, and she slides her tongue into the girl’s mouth, and Yolanda wants to scream.
