Mike still had one more thing on his mind that’s been eating at him. It wasn’t that crazy of a question to ask. They had nothing better to do anyway. Also, they were friends and friends usually talked to their friends about these kinds of things, right? This could just be one friend asking another a simple question. Anyone would’ve done the same. To fill the silence, make the wait shorter. And he used to talk about El a lot, so it only made sense to give Will an opportunity to do the same.
"So who was it?" It came out in one frantic mess of a phrase that even Mike himself barely understood.
Will jumped a little, startled. "What?"
"Um, you said you had a crush on someone," Mike said, already failing spectacularly. "Who was it? Anyone I know?"

““Will-” Mike whispered, years of sadness and loss and a million other things Will couldn’t understand splaying across his face. Will gently pulled away his hand, something tearing deep inside him as he did. It was the hardest thing to do, to leave that warmth behind.
“I’m a little tired now,” he said, voice thick with unshed tears, not daring to look at Mike, knowing that if he did, nothing would stop him from doing something they would both regret. He walked back across the room and sat on the edge of the bed. For a moment Mike just stood where they’d been, still and unmoving. Will had to use every shred of energy he had left not to get up and go to him. Mike’s shoulders dipped in resignation as he slowly turned around. The darkness masked his expression, but the silence was enough.
For them, Will supposed, silence had always been enough. It would always have to be.”Or: After Nevada, things are not the same. Mike is confusing, though this is not exactly new. Still, there is an earnestness; an honesty that wasn’t there before. Electric glances, small confessions: nothing feels as simple as it used to. Timing, it seems, has never been on Will's side. Or... has it?

Max hums, “Just say hi, Mike. It’s just Will. He’ll be happy to see you.”
“Just Will.”
"Mhm," Max grins, “despite the new look, he’s the same boy.”
Mike shivers, “And the other one?” he knows he ought to hide his grimace. To pretend to be happy for Will. Who did he think he was to be bitter about his friend finally finding love? That’s exactly what he needed to stop being: bitter. But he can’t help it. Mike has been nothing but bitter for the past four years, and now, this is not helping. Not helping at all.
“That’s Carlton!” Max says, looking at Will, her eyes sparkling, “I’m so happy for Will.”
“Uh-huh,” Mike says, looking at them. Now Carlton’s whispering something into Will’s ears. And it feels like he shouldn’t be seeing any of this. It’s such an intimate moment. The way Will gasps and shivers, the glimmer in his eyes, the way Carlton smirks. He smirks. He is smirking. What is wrong with him?

Mike sees Will with a boyfriend at Lumax's wedding, and he realizes he messed up badly. So he decides it's time to get Will back.
