Summary
Alex feels a little bit like he might throw up. He’s already swallowed a handful of extra-strength tums, has escaped to the bathroom to box-breathe, and even started an elaborate breakfast to try and keep his hands and mind busy.
He should feel elated. He should feel happy, and satisfied, and all mushy-gushy at the fact he woke up next to Henry this morning, got to see his bed head, and was kissed softly despite his morning breath.
Instead, he feels a little bit like he might shake apart. Henry is lounging on his couch, scrolling through his phone while Alex hovers over the stovetop and tries not to cry.

He told Phillip first. It was a tremendously stupid idea he can only excuse by the fact that he was thirteen at the time. He thought his brother might help him talk to their parents. He didn’t know how to articulate it feels like there are hands closing around my spine and twisting or sometimes my legs hurt so bad that walking feels like I’ve got glass buried in my feet. He trusted his brother, and even more than that he wanted the desultory and relentless agony to go away.
Phillip didn’t tell their parents. He told their grandfather.

Now that he’s taken a step back from public life, Henry can relax. Without constant pressure to stand up straight and smile through the pain, some cracks start appearing in his facade. Alex starts to notice.

The fight is explosive.
Henry retreats to his office downstairs and Alex sits on the edge of the bed, spine trembling. He replays the conversation in his head, fingers clenching in the bedspread. His eyes squeeze shut and he tries to let it go; tries to stop the thoughts before they form. The comparisons to his parents; the way Henry’s voice had cracked when he called Alex selfish.
It’s just one fight.
One fight.
Every couple fights.

“What do you need from me, Alex?” Henry asks, voice low, draping across Alex like syrup.
Alex swallows and shakes his head. “Nothing, I just. Wanted to complain.”
In the back of his head, warning bells scream liar liar liar.
But he’s been selfish enough today. He fucked up enough at work, he doesn’t also need to wreck all of Henry’s plans for tonight just because he’s feeling a little off-kilter. Alex slides off of Henry’s lap. The immediate cold he feels when he stands is almost enough to make him sit back down, to ask for something, anything, to help him break out of whatever mindset has overtaken him.
