Kaina opens her eyes slowly. The ceiling stares back at her, and a sliver of morning light falls across the bed. The other side is empty—cold, too, but that is only to be expected. Rei has always woken early and left very little body heat behind when she rises from bed.
Kaina stretches out one arm, and then the other. The pain runs deep, piercing down to her bones, but it is not intolerable this morning. It takes her only a few minutes to stand, and she elects to forgo her cane for the short walk out to the kitchen. Rei’s house is a small one, far out in the country, away from the bustling crowds and reporters who still want to grill her on what it was like to be married to Endeavor. Kaina has only officially been living here for a few months, but she’s found she likes it.
It’s nice to live a quiet life, away from the society that broke the girl she once was.

“Why would a witcher keep have burn salve meant for humans?” It wasn’t a challenge, but the question wasn’t entirely innocent either. None of Cirilla’s training put her at risk of burns and any remaining pain from Yennefer’s burns from Sodden could be dealt with via her newly returned chaos. This wasn’t something made for either of them being repurposed.
“It wouldn’t,” the man said bluntly. “I found the recipe in a book and made it.” He shrugged lightly, like it was nothing. Like it wasn’t more than anyone had done for Jaskier since Yennefer saved him from the burning hands of another mage. “I’ve got a penchant for alchemy, it should work.”
