Summary
Because here’s the thing about Buck. The thing about Buck is that he likes simple sentences. Easy to follow instructions. When, where, what, how. Buck is smart, of course, and he can understand and infer and deduct from context clues and body language. Technically. Technically, he can do these things. But he prefers not to. He doesn’t like to guess. He doesn’t like to guess, because guessing makes him nervous. And Buck hates being nervous. Doesn’t everyone?
But Buck hates it more than most. Buck likes reassurance, he likes knowing things for certain. Because if he doesn’t know for certain, he’ll stress and he’ll ruminate and he’ll twist himself inside out and backwards wondering and worrying and assuming the worst. And when Buck assumes the worst, he makes terrible decisions. So it’s just easier this way. It’s easier to cut the middle man and for Eddie to decide things for Buck.

Buck moves out of Eddie's house in Los Angeles. A month later, Eddie and Christopher move back in.

Summary
Once everyone heads off to the bunks after dinner, Buck wastes no time in dragging one of the stools from the kitchen over to the Tetris cabinet, where he, too, settles in as if he were getting into bed.
The cabinet is new but the interface is a replica of the original, and when he boots the monitor up, Buck is faced with pixelated fireworks and a cartoon version of Saint Basil’s Cathedral. He nudges the red joystick and the main menu pops up. The left side of the screen reads YOUR GOAL IS TO FILL LINES!
Buck cracks his knuckles.
or, Buck plays Tetris. And a lot of it.

“Fuck it,” Eddie mumbled before unlocking the phone again and opening his text thread with Buck. They hadn’t texted since Buck asked him if he wanted a scone or a danish from their favorite coffee shop before their last shift. Eddie sighed and pressed the corner of the phone against his forehead.
He didn’t want to ask for help. He could spend another hour circling around the city. But he didn’t want to. He wanted this awful horrible day to be done. He wanted to hold his child and pretend for a little bit that everything was still whole. He sighed again before pressing call and pressing the phone to his ear.

Eddie finally asks for what he needs in the aftermath of the sudden loss of his Abuela. Buck finally stops running from his grief. And then Eddie’s parents show up.

Buck feels raw when he wakes up. His face hurts and he’s got a pounding headache. He’s overwarm and not alone. Something moves on his arm—
He slaps at it blindly.
“Ow, fuck! What the hell, man?” Eddie whisper-shouts, startled but still endearingly mindful of the quiet sanctity of the bunk room.
“I thought you were a bug,” Buck croaks.Buck is just trying to do what Bobby told him to do. It might require an extended bug metaphor to get there.

There are some great quick-and-dirty guides to HTML on A03. This is not one of them - it is a comprehensive guide
It's now 2025, a decade later. A03 supports some new HTML and and we're all walking around reading fic on supercomputers that fit in a jean pocket. It was time to update.
The previous three chapters have been divided into smaller concepts. Each tag continues to have - at a minimum - a link to the w3schools page about it (so you can learn more), a code example, and the result of the code example. Most tags have their attributes, things like [src] or [title], listed and examples of how using the attributes modify the tags.
There's a chapter on Bad Ideas, including how some of the archive's default CSS is available to you to format your work (users can't turn that off by hiding a workskin!)
Oh. And I added a bunny army. You could learn how to add one too.

“You’re just as melodramatic as Buck,” his dad says fondly, palming the back of Chris’ head.
“Learned from the best,” he says, and the whole time the inside of his head is: not another girlfriend, not another girlfriend, not another girlfriend, not another -
And then his dad says, “speaking of Buck . . .” his tone oh-so casual and also somehow forced in a way that’s so immediately suspicious that Chris snaps his head up fast enough something cracks.

"It's like, I don't wanna die, you know?"
Buck takes a long drag of a lukewarm beer, setting the empty bottle down on the thick, sticky bartop. "But sometimes I think it might be easier."
The bartender, a tall, leggy blonde that reminds Buck, fleetingly, of Lucy, flicks her eyes up to look at him from where she's doing dishes behind the counter. Her eyes flick back down to the glasses in the sink before she responds.
"Easier than what?"

"Would you dance with me?” Buck asks, speaking so quick that the words seem to morph into each other, as if that five word question would be one word, “I mean you said you loved it and you haven’t been able to do it and the wikipedia article I skimmed through said you need a partner–”
“I’d love to,” Eddie says, cutting him and his rambling off, without even really thinking about it, but it’s the truth.
Of course Buck has already read the ballroom article on wikipedia, probably the first person ever to read it, and of course he will dance with him, of course he wants to dance with him.

“I guess Eurydice and Orpheus didn’t get their happy ending?”
“No,” Buck confirms, with a rueful sigh, “he got her back, but the condition was that he couldn’t look backwards until they got back to earth, but he looked back, and he lost her.”
Eddie eases up the pressure on his palm, without even bothering to check how reddish his skin might be, as he inhales sharply.
He cannot help but think about the way he doesn’t seem to be able to look away from Buck now that he is back in LA. How his gaze always finds Buck, at work and in their home. It’s an instinct.

Buck tilts his head, watching him closely. “I think it’s because deep down, we like it. Because it feels right. Because it makes sense.”
Eddie’s breathing is uneven now, his hands twitching at his sides like he doesn’t know what to do with them. But Buck doesn’t stop. He can’t.
“I love you, Eddie.” His voice is quiet and certain. “More than I have ever loved anyone in my life. I think—I think I’ve been in love with you since the moment I met you. And I think you’ve known that for a long time.”

“Okay, this is—” Eddie runs a hand through his hair, growing increasingly distressed, “you guys are purposely missing the point here. Buck, I’m not getting high with you, dude.”
“Uh, why not?” Buck asks, tilting his head. He has the audacity to sound genuinely puzzled.
“We can’t. We’re firefighters,” Eddie says, confused that Buck is confused.
Buck gives him a sad smile. “Not right now, we aren’t. And we won’t be, Eddie, not for a while.”
Buck and Eddie get injured on the job and decide to smoke a lot of weed about it.

Summary
Buck’s . . . not sure how he got here.
He knows how he got here, it’s just the here of the matter that’s got him five degrees south of a full mental breakdown partnered up with the full scale collapse of the most important relationship in his life. Because Eddie—Eddie’s doing him a favor—and Buck’s body, Buck’s traitorous fucking body is assigning a level of intimacy to all this that’s so beyond warranted, Eddie’d be up and across the room before Buck could clear his throat if he had even the slightest sliver of suspicion.
Which is to say—
Eddie’s straddling Buck’s back, hands digging into the meat of Buck’s thigh, working out the aches from one of the most exhausting shifts he’s ever been on—and that is including any shifts featuring the Q word—because he’d been kind and caring enough to notice that Buck’d been favoring his good leg towards the end of the shift. His thighs are bracketing Buck’s, and Buck, god, Buck can feel every shift and flex of those thighs as he leans forward and shifts his weight.

The morning after Buck and Eddie share a bed for the first time.
-----
“I liked it,” Eddie says, pulling his thumb back just a little to coast back over Buck’s bottom lip, spreading the spit to make it shiny. “I like it.”
Buck audibly swallows. “What?” he asks, but not like he didn’t hear. Like he wants it more than he thinks he’s allowed, and so he asks, to make sure Eddie is certain.
“I missed it,” Eddie continues. “Sharing a bed with someone. Not being alone.”

“Maybe you should try casual. Date a friend who would still be your friend after you break up,” Buck says, and in the same breath, without thinking, “Date me.”
He snaps his mouth shut, his entire body flushing with heat. Eddie looks at him for a very, very long second. “You.”
Through the sudden panic, Buck’s mouth goes on autopilot, “No sex, just a few dates, we’ll have an amicable break up. I already know and love Christopher. And anyway, I’m a guy. So, no need to worry about you catching feelings either.”
-
Spoiler alert: it’s not casual. They don’t break up. And they have sex.

“And you’re posting this because you’re an ally,” Hen says, realization dawning on her face.
“Yeah,” Buck confirms. “Why is this so confusing?”
“It’s not,” Hen says. Chimney opens his mouth, as if to object, and Hen kicks him sharply. “As a card-carrying lesbian, I thank you for your allyship.”
“Awesome.” Buck grins, relieved. He pauses as her words register. “Wait. Do you actually have a card? Is this a thing? I feel like I should know this.”
Based on the way Hen bursts into laughter, he’s pretty sure the answer is no.

Mrs. Young smiled. “As teachers, we don't get to sit down and talk one on one with each child as much as they deserve. This assignment always grants me a beautiful insight to my students. Their proudest accomplishments, their darkest moments, or even some facts I've never known.”
She lifted a hand to her heart. “So with that, I would like all of you hear from one of the most beautiful essays I've had the pleasure of reading, from one of the-” she sighed. “-funniest kids I've met. Please welcome Christopher Diaz.”
...Christopher smiled into the microphone. "My name is Christopher Diaz. Here's my essay."
"Dear abandoning dead Mom."
The silence from the audience was deafening.
"Oh god." Eddie whispered beside him.

Summary
He warns Chris as best he can, even though he knows he’s seen his father in bad shape before. It’s different this time, though, and they both know it. Chris hasn’t seen Eddie face-to-face in months, and now he’s stuck forever with this reunion, this memory, instead of a man bounding up his parents’ porch to kiss his hair or a dramatic cross-airport sprint for the best hug of his life, and Buck wishes he could fix it but he can’t. So he stays by his side, and they walk into the room together.
It’s bad.
Eddie’s on a ventilator, a thick tube running out of his throat and an IV hooked to his arm. There’s a catheter placed as discreetly as it can be, but it’s there, along with heartbeat monitors hooked up to his chest, which is thankfully covered by his hospital gown. Neither him nor Chris are ready to see how far the bandages stretch across him, how deep the scarring will run. Eddie, pale and with his eyes closed, looks like a ghost, like a man stretched thin, frozen between life and something else, between LA and Texas, between one half of his heart and the other.
