    Summary

Bill Cipher begs the Axolotl for a second chance on the verge of death. The Axolotl agrees, like the bleeding-heart idiot that it is. All Bill has to do is pass a little trial. How hard can that be for a dream demon of unfathomable cosmic power?

He wakes up in 1979. And he is not a dream demon of unfathomable cosmic power.

    Summary

His flesh hand drifted over to his left rib cage, tracing over mottled flesh where a soulmark used to be. The area was so marred by scars that the feather-like mark wouldn’t be recognizable even if it were still there. But that mark had faded long ago. What were a few scars over an empty patch of skin?

Vash wasn’t aware he was staring until the priest looked at him and smirked. “Am I that nice to look at, Blondie?”
“Oh, um sorry! I didn’t mean to be rude!” Vash felt his face reddening. “I just thought it was awfully kind of you to spare a prayer for those bandits. Most people never try to talk things out these days.”
“And is that what you were doing?” The priest kicked off of the wall, leaning towards him. “Trying to talk things out with lawless criminals?”
Vash smiled awkwardly. “Yeah… I just thought I’d give them the chance to make things right, you know?”
“Then perhaps it’s fate that we ran into each other,” the priest chuckled. Vash was all too aware of the way his chest shook as he did (why was his shirt unbuttoned so far down? Is that normal for priests these days?). “The name is Wolfwood. Nicholas D. Wolfwood. And you, Needle Noggin?”

    Summary

The church bell of La Misión de Cristóbal tolled midnight across the valley. Its clear song rolled over the grassy valley floor and down the small road, little more than a horse trail, between the mission and the town of Concepción. Deep shadows cloaked the land as an ocean of stars whirled above. No moon hung in the sky that night, a bad omen. On a black night such as this, demons were said to wander down from the mountains to claim innocent victims in their sleep.

Nicholas would never have put stock in those old wives’ tales, had he not been exactly the kind of creature they warned about. He stood at the crossroads, where the Concepción road met the larger wagon track that led to Linares in the west. His eyes, unencumbered by the depth of the darkness surrounding him, scanned the road in the direction of the mission. Somewhere out in the wavering grasses, Angelina, wearing the skin of a coyote, prowled through the night, harassing rabbits out of their dens for the fun of hearing their panicked squealing.

Nicholas raised his newly rolled cigarillo to his lips, lit it with the tip of his finger, and took a deep breath.

    Summary

Sand crunches under Wolfwood's feet as he paces himself behind Meryl and her new protégée, Milly. The Punisher rests heavy over his shoulder, the familiar ache of her buckles digging into his muscles more irritating than usual.
The sand sways under his feet, and his head pounds.
Fuck, he thinks. Food poisoning would be a hell of a thing to have, what with the scant amount of double dollars to his name. The vials in his pocket clink quietly, temptingly. He shoves a hand in his pocket and thumbs over one absentmindedly.
He swallows thickly with a sudden craving, so strong it's nauseating. Yanking his hand out of his pocket like it's been burned, he forces back another wave of vertigo, and narrows his thoughts to putting one foot in front of the other.

    Or;

The unravelling of Nicholas D. Wolfwood after high noon at JuLai, and how Vash puts him back together.

    Summary

And then, he heard it. Growling. Snarling. Hissing. These sounds weren’t unusual here, but Vash didn’t recognize the tone of this creature’s voice. Its cadence was different from the forest-dweller’s. This was an outsider.

Vash proceeded cautiously. The closer to his cottage he got, the louder the sounds became. When he got to the clearing he called home, he saw the source of the noises.

A large, black wolf was writhing on the ground a few feet from his front door. Its right hind leg was stuck in what appeared to be a poacher’s trap and it was trying its best to crawl into the cottage. It looked to be in extreme pain.
