[Uno POV.]
Despondence in his eyes, hands shaking uncontrollably and entire body shivering. He’s drenched in cold sweat and blood. Pathetic.

Summary
She thinks of Vincent next, indifferent, a complete contrast to Rody. She doesn’t know what exactly to think of him. He’s interesting, a good cook, the owner of a fancy bistro. If she had to say what animal he resembles, she’d probably call him a black cat. The moody ones that swat you when you try to pet them. Even then, the cat would hold more love for her than the man himself. Even while she’s right next to him, he still feels so distant. (She humors herself with the mental imagery of a cat chef.)

it's gotten so cold. so cold. so cold. everything around you has frosted over except the searing heat of legs and hands pinning you down, the pain and dizziness and the way it starts to fade away
his face. blank. eyes wide. certain. determined. ruthless. utterly captivating. god help you.

Summary
He remembers that day, how the scent of the grass was overpowered by the cigarette, the cricking of the cicadas, the chatter between the older men, he remembers looking from behind the screen door. He remembers being shooed off by his relatives, being told that the smoke was bad, and that good kids aren’t allowed to smell it. A few years later, he remembers seeing that same uncle at the hospital. A few months down the line, he saw him at a funeral. He didn’t know that uncle well, but all he knew was that whatever cigarettes are, they were responsible for his death. (That was also the time he learnt what death was. That must’ve impacted how he viewed smoking, he thinks.)
And that subconscious fear of cigarettes sort of stuck with him. The first time he’d seen his friends smoke was when he was fifteen. They were young, but old enough to think they were mature. He’d seen someone from his little group pull out a box of cigarettes, pulling a stick from its container with ease. That friend passed them off to the rest, then to Winnie, who voiced his concern.

There was an awkward silence between the two, and it takes everything in his body to not splash his coffee at his coworker’s expensive suit, or to get up and slap him across the face, or stomp on his Augusti Couth ‘73 edition bronzed leather dress shoes with silked lined interior edges, or whatever he called them. It wasn’t like he memorized what his stupid, stylish, expensive shoes were called.

Summary
A cough, and the intern turns towards the sound. His coworker, the one he was thinking of earlier. He looks at him expectantly from outside the cubicle. He looks back, confused. The taller man makes a gesture; he was pretending to light up a lighter. Ah, that’s what he wants. Of course.
The intern digs into his pockets, fishing out an fancy, expensive looking lighter before handing it to him. His coworker—brent, or, whatever his name was. he lost track the first twenty-seven times—takes it, putting it into the pocket of his presumably, possibly even more expensive suit pocket as he turns to walk away. Not even a thank you? Fine, whatever. It’s just a lighter anyway. Can he go back to his internal monologue now? Stop bothering him, please.
Before he could disappear into the vast sea of cubicles, the intern stops him, for whatever reason.

Summary
The protagonist really wonders when and how he'd started getting attached to his pompous coworker, of all people.
You might ask: how did this absurd situation come about, when your coworker wouldn’t even lend you a light — when you saw you as beneath the soles of his shining shoes, his sterling position? Look at your senior. How he glitters in the dim like a miniature sun — a star that’s starved its neighboring galaxies of light to feed its fire.
(Perhaps you’re just an infinitesimal gnat whining in his ear. Maybe he’ll even give you the time of day… once you’ve gotten a little higher on the corporate ladder, that is. Using the proverbial corpses of cut losses as footholds for the meager chance of a raise.)

He stares at the plate again, the meal suspiciously hot for a supposedly sent-back meal. “It looks fresh..” Rody notes. “It is.” Vince says. “You haven’t even touched it..” He says. “I haven’t.” Vince says back. Rody briefly glances up at Vince (again). “You’re not going to charge me for this, are you?” He asks, he totally is, but it still doesn’t hurt to ask. “I’m not.” Vince answers.
And if Vince isn’t anything, he isn’t a liar, at least when it comes to his cooking. He thinks. Hopefully. There’s no way in hell that Rody can’t afford something like this, especially in this lifetime.

Summary
He attempted to sit up, attempting to push himself off the couch, but he was met with a very firm hand, shoving him back down on the couch. The wind was nearly knocked out of his lungs as the hand remained on his chest, forcing him to keep his torso glued to the couch.
“Down.” It was a command that came from the diaphragm. “Stay.”
Very quickly, Rody stilled. Still panting and wide-eyed, his eyes adjusted to the darkness and searched the figure’s features for anything familiar and recognizable. His front-door was open, the hallway light illuminating the back of the figure, casting a shadow across his front. And, as his eyes adjusted, he could only stare in shock when he realized that the figure holding him down was none other than Vince.
“Vince…?”
