It’s dark, but Aaaqil can see the outline of someone standing in the open doorway, holding something that looks like a knife.
He freezes. No. No, no, no.
“It was an accident,” the silhouette choked.
His blood ran cold, and a jolt of recognition coursed through his entire body. Aaaqil runs toward him with everything he has, taking the taller of the two in his arms and squeezing as tight as he can. He can hear his heartbeat, and he’s breathing so hard that it sounds like he’s coughing up his lungs.
Aaaqil even knows the feel of the jacket- he’s worn it before, many times. He smelled something like dirt and sweat on it, as if the close stranger had gone sprinting somewhere at night. The college student presses against his chest as tight as he can-- he feels his glasses almost crack under the pressure, but it doesn’t matter.
The dining room knife clatters onto the hardwood. He kicks it away, still holding onto Callum.
“It’s okay.”

Just like the flames of his lantern, he was unwavering. He would never disappear.
Not until every star in the night sky withered away into nothingness.
