If he looked too hard, he saw it. saw Yuan’s devotion for what it was.
If he lingered there, he felt it too.
What happens when the game goes too far, when the hook lodges itself too deeply inside, unwilling to let go? The pleasure of the catch, the dread. To take another’s life, to flay the carcass on an open flame, or otherwise, to consume it raw.
He had taken Yuan’s life, subsumed it with his own, couldn’t bear to throw him back in now that he knew what it felt like to dig his hook inside. To hold him there, flailing, gasping, desperate for breath, desperate to never breathe again.
