Rowena is quiet on the way home, though she keeps her fingers laced through his. Sam watches her out of the corner of his eye, not pushing her to talk until she was ready. When he parks in the garage and shuts the car off, the redhead finally turns to him, keeping their fingers interlocked.
“I think we should try,” she says, the words seeming to slip out of her, and Sam’s eyebrows furrow together in confusion. At his look, she swallows hard and shrugs a shoulder. “I think we should try to have a baby.”
Sam’s eyes blow wide and he goes a little slack jawed at the sheer shock of her words, given they were some of the last words he’d ever expected out of her. He traces a thumb over the round of her cheek, studying her, and she offers him a small but genuine smile.

It’s one of the rare nights they spend at Rowena’s apartment- Sam likes to spend a weekend away from the bunker, on occasion, just the two of them. He loves his brother, loves Cas and Jack, but he also likes the privacy Rowena’s luxury apartment affords the two of them.
He’s got dinner cooking and everything needs some time to simmer- so he tugs Rowena over to the couch and hauls her into his lap, grinning at the giggles that flutter down around his ears as she shimmies in his lap. She doesn’t know how it happened, exactly- she and the angel are the only ones in the bunker, Sam and Dean off on a case with Apocalypse World Charlie and Jack, the two of them not needed for the case for once. Rowena had agreed to stay in the underground bunker for a few weeks to make things easier- Sam called her so often she had to be in his speed dial at this point- but there was no witchcraft necessary for this case, apparently.
Why Castiel had stayed behind, she was still unsure of.
She’d been drinking in the library when the angel had wandered in, eyebrows furrowing curiously at the sight of her. Normally she remained in her room unless she and Sam were researching, or they were all eating- she’d enchanted the place to the highest extravagance, of course. But something had compelled her to drink in the library, the scotch warming her belly as she met Castiel’s stormy gaze.
“Can I help you, dearie?” she asked, and Cas shook his head, but there was something in his expression that was just familiar enough for her to offer: “Drink with me, then?”
