A wink is the beginning of a banquet.
“Close your eyes. Tell me what you feel.”
Aventurine obeys, and feels Ratio linger for a moment before placing it between his lips. He’s tempted to open his eyes, to meet Ratio’s gaze as he swallows, but it’s not the right time. He’s still trying to take it slow with Ratio, because deep down, he really does like him — ever since the first time he saw him moving in, standing on the landing surrounded by a heap of papers and contracts in a blue transparent folder. Now he parts his lips, letting the cherry rest delicately on his tongue — he waits, then bites down into what turns out to taste metallic and vile. Almost like blood.
“Have you ever dreamed of eating someone?”
Or: strange noises come out the ventilation ducts since Professor Veritas Ratio came to stay in the renovated apartment next to Business Man Aventurine's. He could be a criminal. Worst thing? Aventurine yearns for him.

Summary
“A Doctor of Chaos?” Aventurine echoes, rereading the letter Veritas has handed him. The seal of the IPC presses into the paper, accompanied by a torrent of words that, to the gambler’s eyes and ears, mean absolutely nothing.
Veritas shrugs, loosening his grip on the luggage. “That would be me.”
Aventurine arches an eyebrow and reads it again, for the fourth time:
As a Senior member of the Department of Strategic Investment and one of the Ten Stonehearts, we are pleased to inform you, Aventurine of Stratagems, that you have been assigned a Doctor of Chaos until you have recovered from the traumatic events in Penacony. Doctor Veritas Ratio will attend to your mental and physical well-being for as long as deemed necessary. Until then, your leave shall remain paid, for no more than three hundred and sixty-five days, at which point medical assistance may be renewed.

The world fractures into fragments as he rides him, Veritas’ face twisted in a mix of excitement and reluctance, trying to hide how much he actually enjoys being taken that way. Aventurine shuts his eyes, tasting only Veritas’ throat, wanting to consume him until no trace of holiness remains. To hell with religion, to hell with purity. Veritas is a god desecrated by the mediocrity of the boy above him. The realization is brutal—but there. Veritas cannot elevate him, but in this pleasure, he can give him satisfaction.
“Deeper,” Aventurine all but screams.

“I always think of you,” Aventurine says at once, leaning close. “And I miss you like hell.” How could I not? You’re my adolescence.
Veritas kisses him first. It happens like this: one hand on his cheek, the other at his nape, pulling him in. Aventurine stretches his legs, lets Veritas lie down on top of him. They kiss as if they’re still talking—and they are. They trade breath, because kissing, besides devouring, also means this: placing commas and full stops. Their moans chase one another like they used to on the school field, when they were boys, before Aventurine joined the Club and Veritas was the only person who really mattered.
Or: Aventurine and Ratio meet for the first time in high school, and they’re inseparable. But when Aventurine is invited to join an exclusive school club—the Ten Stonehearts—while Ratio is left on the sidelines, nursing a secret feeling that goes beyond friendship. Their bond begins to fracture… until it breaks completely.
Three years later the balance has shifted—Ratio shines while Aventurine feels adrift. But history tends to repeat itself, and when a reunion brings them face to face, the past is never buried.

Given your situation, they are the best option.”
“I don’t--” Aventurine exhales and pinches between his eyebrows. “Ratio, I don’t want pets.”
(While waiting to find out if he's been fired, Aventurine's been having some unpleasant nightmares. Ratio brings him some creations to try to improve his mental health. They're surprisingly helpful--but they've got their work cut out for them.)
