Dean wakes up in a cold sweat with a name on his lips and doesn’t even bother to look at the time before standing up and walking down the empty bunker hallway.
Each step echoes through the dark, dormant, chambers until he steps onto the freezing tile of the bathroom floor and hisses at the coolness on his calloused feet.
He peels his shirt and boxers off of his skin, turns the shower water on, and steps in before checking the water temperature, feeling the blistering hot water soak away the remnants of every moment he can never forget.

I am not the kind of person to express my feelings loudly or the kind of person that trusts anyone and everyone because I have learned better than that from my own experiences. Nor am I the kind of person to purposely draw attention to myself. I am just me. I am broken right down to the core, the person that I look up to most in this world cannot accept me for who I truly am and refuses to support me unless I do something they think I should do. I have a few close friends but they all have higher priorities and to be honest I don’t blame them. Dean Winchester hates me. I mean, I have never met someone with so much hatred towards someone they don't even know, but according to the rest of the human population that is a completely legitimate reason. Every single time he even sees me, whether it's in the hallway, or around town, which just so happens to be normal considering Star's Hollow is the smallest town in New Jersey, he immediately stares at me with those beautiful, I mean, disgustingly ugly green eyes that you can see the future through if you stare for at least 30 seconds. But, I mean, I would never stare into his eyes like that, psshhh, oh who am I kidding, I have a problem. Oh and my cat bit him, sorry, that was random, but my cat, Stuart, who is grey, and soft, and completely adorable and loveable by the way, ran out the door when my stupid brother Gabriel held my front door open too long, and of course of all the people to be standing there walking down the street, it had to be Dean frickin Winchester.

Dean’s sitting at the kitchen table with Sam when his phone rings. Jody’s name flashes across the screen and he considers not picking up. It’s not like Dean doesn’t want to talk to Jody, it's just that he can’t bear talking to anyone these days.
“Hi, Jody,” Sam says.
“Howdy, boys.” She asks them to take over a case. Something about werewolves. Dean doubts they will, Sam hasn’t let him pick up a gun in months, not since their last hunt.
Jody’s voice cuts through the phone. “Alright, if you boys don’t wanna take the case, I’ll see if Castiel will, but I think he’s helping Claire in Colorado–”
Dean doesn’t hear a damn thing after that, and by the looks of it, Sam doesn’t either. For the first time in days, Dean opens his mouth and speaks. “Cas is alive?”
Jody’s voice is quiet on the other end. “He didn’t tell you?”

Sometime between finishing his master's degree and starting his new teaching job in upstate New York, Castiel had given up on pursuing any type of committed relationship. He may have grasped how humans interacted and formed social bonds in a theoretical or academic sense, but that was a far cry from actually understanding how to put that knowledge into practice. Dean, thankfully, seemed to be on the same page. For the first time in a long time, he had a good thing going for him. He was living somewhere other than his car, had enough side hustles to put a bit of extra money in his pocket, and had sworn he wouldn't let himself catch feelings for a hook-up ever again.
That goes about as well as expected.

Summary
Cas looks even more tired than Dean feels. His eyes are red and the bags under them are more prominent than ever. His hair is a hot mess, reminding Dean of the time when Cas was still able to take off any second with just a flick of his wings. The cut on his neck is covered with a white bandage now and he wears different clothes, a gray sweatpants and a black shirt with a hole on the collar, that Dean recognizes as one of his. It makes him look different. It makes him look soft.
Dean likes it a lot.

Cas is back and that is great. Except that it worries Dean how much Cas struggles to adjust to humanity, haunted by nightmares and memories every night. So it's just a gesture of their friendship, despite Castiel's feelings for him, when Dean offers Cas to stay with him at night.
