She shows him the little red box and there’s an elegant and simple ring that symbolizes the weight of tomorrow on the rest of her life, and he thinks that she could've died that day and it would have been on him (again).
Then she kisses him and he—he is selfish and self-punishing, all at once, and doesn’t know what to do.

Summary
Sam's first year of uni was pretty tame, all things considered. He’d changed his major three times in one week but settled on classics after talking with Luke, half-drunk. He made friends in the drama club he’d signed up for and went out with them every few weeks for a drink. He passed his classes just barely and half-dead.
Second year was worse. More assignments swamping all his free time, losing touch with his family after showing no signs of changing his major, flubbing several of his drama exercises, a hundred little things that piled up to drown him. At some point, drinking had become less of a get-together to have fun and more of a life-saving shield against the pressure of everything.
It was the only thing that shut his thoughts up.

Cody was still staring at him. Fox wasn't sure what made him keep talking.

Cody nodded slowly.
"Yeah," he said, voice a little hoarse, "that's usually how I lose them too."
Fox watched as his little brother finished the rest of his drink and stared down into his empty cup.
