When Diomedes kisses him softly, just once, on the way out one time, as the morning light breaks through the tent flaps, Odysseus stands stock-still for a minute, thinking and rationalizing and trying to pretend it away.
The thing is, Diomedes is there and gone, a light autumn breeze disguised as a warrior-king, and it’s never going to be anything to him, and Odysseus is a tired old man who only ever wanted to stay home. He’s terrified that one day Diomedes will see straight through him, right to the rotten core, and turn his back like he should’ve done ten years ago.
