She swallows, shallow breaths finally morphing into some semblance of normality. Nikolai hasn’t moved and she’s grateful for it. If she had to look at him it might be harder to turn away, to deny herself, to be selfish. She wants to ask him to leave, to step closer, to never speak to her again, to kiss her as if his life depended on it. Instead she says, “And? You know, for all your talk of being charming, you don’t seem to be doing a very good job of charming her. Have you lost your edge?”
If he hears the slight tremble in her voice, he doesn’t let on. “Impossible,” he says, softly. She hadn’t heard him move but he’s standing beside her now, his shoulder just barely resting against hers.

It knows she doesn’t like the demon. It remembers all the times she yelled at it, hurt it, left it chained to the bed. The demon growls as it hurls a table into the wall in its frustration and hurt at the memories.
It sighs tiredly, looking back at the woman with the barely breathing chest and feebly pumping heart.
It does not like her. Not one bit. But the King does. And she likes the King. The demon likes the King, too.

Nikolai Lantsov has several problems, and his upcoming political marriage is the least of them. He must behave at all times like a king - impossible. He must keep hidden the damage done by the Darkling's nichevo'ya. And he must definitely not tell the cold, efficient Zoya Nazyalensky, his general and bodyguard, that he has some rather unkingly feelings for her.
AU - A mix of book (King of Scars) and show, so Alina has destroyed the Fold, and returns to rule at Nikolai's side, as they agreed.
Nikolai is my favourite new character in season two of Netflix SAB; and chapter one of KoS already has me rooting for Zoya. So this short story just made sense.
