"Huh. Weird," Will says softly to himself when he crouches down and touches the handlebars.
"What's weird?" Mike asks, hoping there isn't a nervous edge to it. But there's a hint of pink on Will's face and he suddenly doesn't seem so eager to meet his eyes, smiling avoidantly.
"I — I — I know where we are," Will's hand comes to the back of his neck, rubbing nervously. He seems upset and surprised in the same breath, "It's just — Vecna's never used this memory of mine before."

“In the church,” she adds. “It’s shielded. Old. Quiet. He won’t look for you there.”
Mike’s fingers curl slightly into Will’s jacket, instinctive and protective. “I’ll stay with him,” Mike says immediately, not even looking at Hopper this time. “The whole time.”
El nods. She doesn’t question it, like she knows that’s where he’s always been meant to be. Will exhales slowly, then looks at Mike. “You don’t have to—” he starts.
“I know,” Mike says quietly. “But I want to.”
or; Mike stays with Will in the Upside Down as the group splits, and when Will faces danger in the church where they're hiding, Mike realizes this is his final chance to bring Will back.

Summary
His brain finally catches up with Mike’s words, and Mike is saying things like, “C’mon, Will—you can do it,” and “I’m so proud of you,” and “Don’t rush, it’s okay.” In the softest tone imaginable, and if Will maybe pretends to still be a little more out of it than he actually is just to keep hearing Mike talk to him like that—well, that’s his business.

Will hasn't stopped walking away from him, and he’s far enough now that Mike can no longer really see the details of his jacket. The rain feels like needles against his skin, and a frustration builds in his gut. Mike can't stand this anymore.
He breaks off into a run.

The demogorgon is lifeless, and Will’s never seemed so full of it. He unfurls his hands and lifts his head to meet Mike’s waiting eye, and—for a long while, he just stares, knuckles smearing blood across his upper lip, headlights painting him golden.
I love you, Mike thinks fleetingly, then pitches forward and pukes onto the street.
Mike has a concussion—and a few other issues. Set after the events of Chapter Four: Sorcerer.

Will’s lungs seize. Shit.
“We’re talking now,” he tries for casual, voice small, hoping it’s enough.
“Not like this,” Mike says. “Real talking.” He swipes at his eyes angrily, pulls away, wraps his arms around his knees. “You used to tell me everything. Even the stuff you didn’t tell Dustin or Lucas. It used to be just… us.”
In which Mike falls apart mid-mission, and for the first time, Will is the one to catch him.

Desperation sits heavy on Mike's tongue. The taste of it is metallic like blood and nails. Will looks at him, half sat up in bed with sleepily confused eyes. It was as if Mike was waking a child from a deep slumber. But as he sat on his knees, tears streaming down his face because of a dream he can only vaguely remember, he found his hand slowly moving towards Will's and gripping it tightly. The words came out of his mouth before he could stop them and when he watched Will's eyes widen at the words, Mike felt instant regret.
"Tell me I'm good."
Logline: When Mike wakes from another vecna-fueled nightmare, he desperately seeks comfort from Will. Will seems just as desperate to give it to him.

Mike doesn’t look like he believes him. Will doesn’t blame him. “Then why do you keep leaving?”
The world ends, and then some. Mike and Will find each other again, amidst the debris and distance.

Summary
And maybe because he’s looking so closely, or maybe just because it’s Will and Mike knows all his little tells like the back of his own hand—better, probably—he knows that Will’s about to collapse probably ten seconds before it happens, and he’s moving, skirting around the mangled corpse of the demogorgon and sliding the last few feet through the mix of blood and Upside Down slime to drop to his knees and catch Will just before his head would’ve hit the concrete.

Picking up right where vol 1 left off, the right side up gang regroups and Mike has lots of feelings about everything that's happened. This is 100% a byler fic, but it's just as much about Mike having (or at least starting) his version of Will's self-acceptance/gaining his powers arc, because he needs and deserves it.
