When Hilda goes to pay for the meal, the girl in the photo stares up at her with those familiar brown eyes. She would never say she longs for that poor sad girl now that she can hold the real woman herself in her arms every night.
But when Marianne won't talk to her on the drive home and her head hurts and it's been a long week and she knows she screwed up her one chance this week to have a good day with Marianne— it's tough, sometimes.

Broken blades, broken bones, torn banners, torn skin, all blackened by fire and protruding from the salted earth. No matter how much blood flows into the cracks and crevices of the battlefield, it still thirsts for more.
The clashing of steel and shouts cut short all fade into a constant buzz, a song of battle more true than the beat of any drum. Somewhere in there, Marianne's prayers, unanswered; she suspects they can't reach the heavens through the cloud of black smoke that's blotted out the sun.
And that's why Dorte lies dead on this ruined scrap of earth.

And she never asks for anything-- except for the goddess to protect her family. But this time, she hesitates.
"Goddess," she whispers, "there is only one thing I want. Father says I will grow into a man soon. Please do not let that happen." She focuses on the goddess with her entire heart and soul. "Please let me wake up tomorrow morning as a girl instead."
Peace washes over her. The girl finishes her prayer, changes back into her normal pajamas, and slides under the covers.
She dreams about the goddess lifting her out her window and teaching her how to fly.

Maybe the answer was in how it felt to stroke her thumb down Powder's cheek, so careful as to not risk hurting her; maybe back somewhere in the moment she laid her head on Mom's growing stomach and heard that first kick and Mom said she was excited to meet her; maybe it was when she was watching Powder get smaller and blurrier as Marcus dragged her out of that alley.
Vi will never be able to answer. Instead, she's finding answers to a new question: How does it feel to not be one?
