The man hovering over him leaned back, releasing Grian completely. Cold night air rushed in to fill the void.
“I guess it’s out in the open now,” the stranger hummed. “Shame. I wanted to avoid this.”
With the additional glow occupying the space between them, Grian was finally able to catch features that were lost in the prior darkness. His curiosity outweighed all else, and he drank them in greedily. As soon as he saw who sat across from him, alarms blared in his mind.
This man wasn’t a civilian, wasn’t even a hero.
“Hello, Doctor,” the villain mused. “You were quite the help today.”

He had to be fine. They had to be fine, and stable, and capable of doing the things that Rand and Rolan shouldn’t or couldn’t do, she had to be able to help and support them and he couldn’t fucking do that if he just became a burden on them instead. He was already one in too many ways, not working and basically just freeloading off of Rolan and taking advantage of Rand’s vulnerable state to get some of the affection and closeness that she so fucking desperately craved.
And now they were having to go to LA to get Kian’s things, which was making Rand stressed because they’d had to leave Barc with one of Rolan’s friends so the dog wouldn’t have to spend hours in the car with them, which was yet another way that Kian was just making their lives worse. More difficult. He tried so fucking hard to do enough for them to outweigh all the ways she was making things worse, but it never felt like enough. It never was enough.

Kian woke up practically the exact same way each night. He slowly awoke from a nightmare, tears in his eyes and a confused and terrified haze in his mind, before she was able to recognise that everything was alright. That they weren’t dying, or already dead, or abandoned and hated and left behind again, they weren’t paralyzed and unable to move or speak or fight back against whatever was happening to him, she wasn’t slowly and painfully breaking apart into nothing at the hands of someone who was supposed to love him. They were just nightmares and horrible memories, and at least for now, he was safe. Everything was okay.
