Summary
Mike Wheeler didn't write love stories.
He wrote adventure. Fantasy. He wrote voraciously, having put out three books in the past three years. Three books which formed the New York Times best selling trilogy that had kids all across America dressing up like "Brian the Brave" for Halloween, wearing cardboard suits of armour, and carrying makeshift shields with red hearts drawn on.
But he didn't write love stories.
Or- One year post college graduation, Mike is a bestselling author. He hasn't spoken to any of the party since his twentieth birthday, leaving them (and Will especially) in his childhood, where he thinks they belong. Will is sharing a shitty New York City apartment with his boyfriend. He's broke but happy, living a life that's full of art, and music, and love.
That is, he thinks he's happy. Until Mike publishes his fourth book, and Will realises that everything he thought he knew about his ex best friend has been devastatingly wrong.

“Don’t you remember?” Lucas asked softly. “When we were kids? Like, sixth grade. We all said we’d be in each other’s weddings.” He chuckled. “And Mike called dibs on being my best man, and then you and Dustin started freaking out, because you were both gonna call dibs, so I said you could all do it. Remember? I need all my best men.”
Will puffed out his cheeks, running a hand through his hair. He already hadn’t lived up to that twice now. He’d missed Dustin’s wedding, he hadn’t even been invited to Mike’s (not that he’d expected to be.) This was his last shot.
And something about it seemed final. If he missed this, then that was it. He had no doubt they’d still try to reach out, but it wouldn’t be the same. He would’ve broken something he couldn’t fix.
He sighed.
“Okay.”
Ten years after the end of the world, Lucas and Max get married.

“So he is just… in my life,” Mike said with disgust as he noticed how pathetic the weight on his chest felt. “In my house. Using my face. With Will.”
The cleric’s expression tightened. “Your friend.”
“My best friend,” Mike corrected too sharply. The moment the words left him, the flare of jealousy turned into embarrassment. He couldn’t remember when he grew to hate how he sounded when the subject was Will.
William’s gaze held steady. “Do you not want him there because you fear for your friend, or because you fear what your friend might feel?”
Mike’s mouth opened, then closed. The question hit too close to the thing he’d been circling for years without touching.OR: Mike wakes up in a paladin’s body, face-to-face with a cleric who looks exactly like Will, except this Will speaks in oaths and shows him a kind of affection he doesn’t feel he deserves.
Back home, someone else is wearing Mike’s skin, saying the things Mike has never dared to say out loud.

Summary
Will gets dumped by Carlton/Carlos/whatever and fired from his job on the same day, takes a last-minute summer job as a tattoo artist to avoid his mom's wedding planning, and doesn't tell Mike Wheeler he's in HIS town.
Mike's living THE college life, getting piercings, crashing concerts, but when he shows up at midnight with his "boyfriend" Riley hoping for a couple's discount on tattoos, Will Byers is the last person he expects to be the artist.
They're both lying. They're both idiots. Max Mayfield has had enough. So have I.
