Hank chokes on his orange juice. He frantically looks around before leaning in, lowering his voice to an exaggerated whisper. “Dude, what the fuck? We’re on a college campus, you can’t just say shit like that in public."
“Yeah, well, it’s not like I want to be!”, Ray hisses back, matching Hank’s tone.
“So what on God’s green earth are you talking about?”
Ray sighs and leans back in his seat. “It’s just– Pete came out to me like a month ago, right? And since then, I just get this sinking feeling in my stomach whenever he mentions that he’s hanging out with some– guy. Well, obviously not when he meets up with you or Art, but like, guys I don't know. This Harkness kid that was glued to his ass after his gig? I hated seeing them together. Or when he tells me he goes to the gym with Collie Parker, it’s like I feel disgusted by the idea of them even being near each other. When his friend came to visit, I couldn’t stand being in the same room as them. It makes me sick imagining him– him being intimate with any of them.”
Hank stares at him.

Pete’s eyes widen. He's not sure he heard him right. Actually, he's convinced there must have been some sort of misunderstanding on his part, because the words I want you to kiss me, Pete sound like they're straight from one of the late night fantasies he regularly feels guilty about.

Summary
Ray wins The Long Walk all those years ago and wishes for a suicide mission. He wishes for the carbine, like he always said he would. But instead of pulling the trigger, he wishes for something else, wishes it into the universe. Something he's not quite sure of at the time, but just that things were different and he'd met Pete and the others elsewhere, somewhere that's not the road. And the universe apparently listens.

The booth is overflowing; Stebbins stretched out long on one side, with Baker practically sitting on his ankle. Across from them, is Olson, and squeezed in beside him are McVries and Parker. They’re huddled around the table, bickering loud enough to carry across the room, even over the noise of the game and the music and every other tired-rowdy group of undergrads in here. From this angle, Ray can just see the edge of McVries’ face, the curve of his scar, tugged taut by his mouth as he leans in to jeer at the others.
Dragging a hand through his damp hair, Ray feels the corners of his mouth lift up in a grin, breaking through the ache in his muscles and the exhaustion of late-October university.
