Ray wins The Long Walk all those years ago and wishes for a suicide mission. He wishes for the carbine, like he always said he would. But instead of pulling the trigger, he wishes for something else, wishes it into the universe. Something he's not quite sure of at the time, but just that things were different and he'd met Pete and the others elsewhere, somewhere that's not the road. And the universe apparently listens.

What was supposed to be a nice day at the beach takes a turn for the worst, leaving both Ray and Pete spiraling. For different reasons, of course.
Ray almost died and that's not what's got him reeling, it's who's responsible for why and how he didn't. Pete, on the other hand, can't bring himself to terms with just how close he was to losing Raymond Garraty.

Ray clears his throat and asks “Are you going out or something?”
“Yeah” Pete walks past him and goes to the mirror they have hanging on the wall behind the door. He begins to adjust his hair, frowning at his reflection as if there is something to fix in his appearance. “Yeah, I’ve got a date”
And there it is. The thread snaps and the sword falls over Ray, cutting him in half and leaving only a mess of blood and flesh where he used to stand. Or, at least, that’s what happens inside his head. In reality, he blinks at Pete in silence, mouth slightly open, nails digging into his forearms.
“A date” he echoes. “How so?”
Or: Ray gets home from class to see Pete all dressed up. Things spiral from there.

They've been in the car for five and a half hours so far, and Art is realizing it was kind of a bad idea. It's been fun, don't get him wrong, and it's worth it for Collie, but he fears something will boil over in the next few hours.
"Is there a single city in this damn state?" Collie asks eventually. There it is.

The booth is overflowing; Stebbins stretched out long on one side, with Baker practically sitting on his ankle. Across from them, is Olson, and squeezed in beside him are McVries and Parker. They’re huddled around the table, bickering loud enough to carry across the room, even over the noise of the game and the music and every other tired-rowdy group of undergrads in here. From this angle, Ray can just see the edge of McVries’ face, the curve of his scar, tugged taut by his mouth as he leans in to jeer at the others.
Dragging a hand through his damp hair, Ray feels the corners of his mouth lift up in a grin, breaking through the ache in his muscles and the exhaustion of late-October university.
