Summary
It had only been four weeks since Bobby passed and Buck felt all of it settling harshly right into his bones. It felt like months had passed rather than just weeks and at the same time, like no time at all. It was no wonder he’d had to come out to the beach all on his own in the middle of the night.
Did he not ask what it was like for Eddie to find out?
Or, Buck is grieving, Eddie is the worst, and Tommy is the soft place that Buck needs to deal with it all. 8x17 and 8x18 fix it fic.

Summary
What if Buck finally realized after the humiliating blowout, on how Eddie said what was wrong, how he made everything about himself and how Eddie called him exhausting throughout the years they were friends (yes, past tense) and abandoned his plans to sublet Eddie’s place. He still needed a place to live and managed to find a run-down place in North Hollywood that needed TLC.
This is a story where Buck builds back his life one step at a time and heals himself.

“What about you? I hear I wasn’t the only hero of the shift. Howie blew up my phone about you saving Gerrard and having the best little brother in law,” Tommy said and just like that. All the warmth faded.
“I, um,” Buck said, “That was a thing. That happened. In Chim’s eyes, yes.”
Tommy put his fork down, frowning.
“Sweetheart, what happened with Gerrard?” He asked softly, reaching to take Buck’s hand in his.
(OR, after the plane disaster, Buck goes to Tommy's and they discuss what happened with Gerrard, therapy, the long summer, and how much they care about each other.)

Summary
“So when you said firsts aren’t lasts, you were truly speaking from experience,” Buck said, understanding. Tommy nodded.
“The moment you said it was your first date with a dude, I had sirens going off, Evan. But I liked you. And when you sat here on this patio and asked for a second chance, I pushed them back and decided it’d be fun. I have never fallen for anyone like I have you. Baby, I have stopped myself from looking at rings. I wanted you living with me within a month of Gerrard’s reinstatement. Seeing you come home in emotional pain was torture for me. It wasn’t fun. It was for real. And then you started talking like you never saw me as anything but some gay mentor you put on some pedestal and I knew I had to run to save myself. If you left me for passion, for someone else, I would be getting over you my entire life. Baby, sweetheart, Evan, there is no one after you breaking my heart,” Tommy said.
(The week that would've been their first anniversary, Tommy reaches out to Buck to see if he can explain himself. They both meet on the patio of a coffee shop they sat at a year previous, wanting to try again and ready to trust.)

Summary
“Buck, that’s not fair -”
“It’s plenty fair! I am not a child! I do not need to be coddled or made fun of like I was the class clown! I am not your fucking golden retriever that you can just pat on the head and send off with a treat. All I wanted was to be talked to. To have someone to just listen and let me listen in turn but all of you –” He twirled on his heel and almost toppled over. “- pushed me away, told me I was too much. That I was exhausting.”
Weeks have gone by and life is returning to normal for everyone but Buck. As much as he tries, he can't move on. And then one day, all it takes is just one off handed comment to send him right over the edge. He's had enough of this shit and he's gonna let everyone know just that.

Summary
Evan sits back on his haunches, unweighting Tommy's legs, and he feels like maybe he could float away from here, unmoored as he is from the bed, from the situation. He's in trouble now, or he will be in a few seconds, but for just this moment he's removed from the forces of gravity, and it feels nice.
"Tommy," Evan says, a tremor in his voice, and that's enough to bring Tommy rocketing back down to Earth. "That wasn't a sext, was it."
Tommy makes a decision. Buck meets him halfway.

Summary
By the end of his speech, tears are falling from Buck’s chin to where his hands are still stuck, half-reaching out for Tommy’s. “I’m so sorry,” Buck whispers, with his stupid big eyes and his stupid big heart and of course he looks absolutely gutted, because he’s never felt anything but the full weight of everyone else’s emotions, “I had no idea. You never told me.”
“I didn’t tell you a lot of things,” Tommy says, “And I regret it. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” Buck assures him, a tinge of desperation on his tongue, “I—I—I forgive you. I wasn’t there for the first bit, but I’m here now, and—and whatever you need, whatever the—the baby needs, I’ll do it.”
“You’re gonna be such a good dad,” Tommy smiles, and this is the part he knew was going to hurt. This is the part he almost couldn’t stomach. This is the part he knows he has to do more than anything else. “That’s why I’m relinquishing parental rights. The baby’s going to be yours—just yours.”

Margaret and Phillip spent years not seeing their children and then slowly got back into contact with them until this point, where they think they’re in a pretty decent place, actually.
Except then Buck gets injured and, as his hospital room fills with evidence of a life they know absolutely nothing about and they meet and hear about people they’ve never heard of (including a child?!), they realise that perhaps it was all simply too little, too late after all.

Buck had learned to hate the question, “Hey, how are you?”
The simple phrase had become the worst thing someone could ask. The words made him anxious, upset, sorrowful, and downright failingly. They were a million emotions, all wrapped up in four words and Buck knew only this; he wasn’t fine.
