It doesn’t make the idea of a frog hotel less weird, though.
“And what is the point of this again?” He asks as Ellie carefully rearranges spare bits of pipe she asked him to bring home from his current jobsite for the sake of this project of hers. They’re on arrangement twenty-three by this point, and he’s not entirely sure that these “hotel guests” of hers are going to care about the aesthetic of their accommodation as much as Ellie clearly thinks they will.
Still, it's the most enthusiastic he’s seen her about anything in weeks, so if playing frog preference architect makes her happy, he’ll do his time shifting pipes around at her instruction.
He’s done far worse for her, after all.

“Everything alright in here?” His partner asks, leaning casually against the doorframe.
“Where do babies come from?” Ellie asks, tilting her head back and almost overbalancing herself in the process, saved only by his hand on her back. She extends grabby hands when Tess crosses to them, Tess giving him a wry look.
“Curious about the birds and the bees, huh?” She asks, lifting Ellie and then settling on his lap, Ellie still in her arms.
He adjusts slightly to get more comfortable. It’s new, this sort of thing, Tess taking the initiative with new levels of intimacy.
He likes it more than a little.

He jumps at Tess’s voice behind them, and the motion bangs Ellie’s head against the car where he’d been lifting her out. He curses and presses his hand over both of hers where they’d flown up to press over the spot.
“Ow,” she says accusingly, glaring at him, looking more than a little betrayed at this reward for her compliance on hour 2 of something she finds boring.
“I’m sorry, baby,” he says, moving her hands enough to kiss the spot and then gently working his fingers through her hair, searching for a bump.
“That hurt,” she says resentfully, and she extends her arms to Tess when she walks closer, jumping ship. He hands her over and rolls his eyes as Tess makes much of the bump.
“Daddy’s trying to knock your brain out, huh?” She soothes, gently touching the spot.
Ellie nods pathetically, eyes big and pitiful.

But before her mom can say what they’re gonna be doing, Uncle Tommy presses the scanner to her neck, and he was right. It’s more a weird sensation than actual hurt.
The way her dad shoves him to the ground at once, though, looks like it definitely hurts.
“Dad!” She calls out, confused and alarmed. At once, she gets between them. She doesn’t know what the fuck her dad and uncle are in a beef about, but she knows enough to know her dad won’t hurt her, even to get to him. Her mom can sort out whatever’s going on to keep the peace. She’s just gotta buy her some time to do it, to talk dad down the way she always does when he’s worked up.
When she looks to her mom, though, she’s gone bone white, eyes wide as she lunges for-
For the scanner on the ground.
The scanner lit up in bright, damning red.

The girl’s eyes snapped up, panicked. She spared a second to glance down at the man in front of her, her eyes racing up and then looked at Joel with the exact same type of terror, before emerging with something in her hands.
Joel watched, immediately suspecting a gun. “Whoa, now-”
The girl lifted her hands up, revealing an old knife. She smeared the tears on her cheeks away, trying to seem bigger than she was, but it didn’t work.
She was a terrified kid.
The urgency in Joel’s expression blinked. “Hey,” He repeated, his voice painted soft, though he didn’t let himself hear it. The girl just stared up at him with her knife, not realizing the tremble of her own grip or the violent shakes that tore through her entire, bare body. He just realized that now. Only her knees were covering her, along with the clearly torn pair of underclothes on her lower half. She cringed under his eyes. “It’s okay,” He tried. “I’m not gon’ hurt you.”
The girl didn’t even blink. She just stared up through her tears, terrified of him.
Fuck.
TLDR: Joel finds a traumatized Ellie on the side of the road. He's immediately soft. Meanwhile, she has to learn how to trust him.
