    Damian was confused.
    Damian prided himself on not being confused very often; it was unbecoming of the Heir of the Demon to misunderstand anything. He trained incessantly, to remember everything he was supposed to do and when he was supposed to do it, and what he was supposed to know and how to use that knowledge. His knowledge had never truly failed him before.
    That is, it had never truly failed him in Nanda Parbat. Gotham, on the other hand, was a completely different monster, and Damian was… struggling.
    Not failing. Never failing. Failing was one thing that the Ibn al Xu’ffasch could not do. Struggling was embarrassing enough.

    Damian stopped just in time to avoid colliding with a white-haired woman by the lettuce. She jumped back, and Jason held up his hands.
    “So sorry, ma’am! He gets a little too enthusiastic sometimes. You alright? Daniel, what do you say?”
    “Sorry, ma’am,” Damian muttered, staring at the floor.
    She took in their little trio. The tiny menace with the grocery cart, Lian drooling happily down the shoulder of Jason’s cheap t-shirt, his own frazzled expression, and her face softened. “She’ll be alright, sweetheart, just look where you’re going next time, ay?”
