“He’s not a ferryman, he’s the hero who saved me!” Mini Durin chirps, his wings beating excitedly.
“I’m no hero.” They’re the first words out of his mouth and it feels like the exact wrong thing to say. He’s never been good at figuring out what is right. “I was just helping him out.”
“Saving a dragon from a dark fate and freeing a whole land of people is no small deed,” says Mona. “You sound like a hero to me.”

The Emperor pauses. For a second he seems to be relishing the big reveal, as if he knows it will do some extent of damage to Kylo.

That’s it. He should kill him. He should run him through with his blade, cut the lifelines and wires, do something, anything to end this twisted man’s life. But the Force holds him back. And for the first time, he doesn’t know which side of it does. So he stills his hand and listens.
“I can turn her to the dark side, like you have always wanted, but failed to do. Then you can rule the galaxy as Emperor and Empress. I will succeed, for I know she has done unspeakable things. Just as you have.”
“What has she done?” he asks in a voice barely louder than a whisper, yet amplified over the screams of lightning.
Palpatine smiles, and shows him.

Pretend I’m some fortunate stranger, some handsome lad you saw in passing—or even, the apparition in your head, conjured solely for your nights of solitude, the entity no one’s had the honor, the pleasure, of displacing.” It’s terribly selfish and vile, for him to demand such things when the diviner’s swallowed so much of her pride for the sake of realizing her dreams, but—but she’s not the only one with foolish, indulgent dreams.
No, no she isn’t. And perhaps if Jing Yuan squeezes his eyes shut strong enough, he’ll be able to pretend any of this is real, even if only for a sliver of their enormous lifespans. Even if, in the end, these are mere delusions—and they will remain so, for him, even if he inevitably ends up indulging her in her most fervent desire.
(It’s so much easier to express desire when it takes on a different guise, they find.)
