“Sorry Al-Haitham, I got carried away last night…” Kaveh murmurs, voice contrite as he brushes more kisses over the contusions on Al-Haitham’s skin, the velvet pads of his palm caressing the fast-fading scars slashed across Al-Haitham’s chest.
Al-Haitham only hums at this unnecessary show of concern. “To think you had once refused to touch me at all,” he says, mouth twitching up into a curve. “And yet here you are now—Greedy, insatiable, and barely able to restrain yourself.”
Indeed, it had taken nearly a year before Kaveh finally acquiesced to lie with Al-Haitham, to allow himself to partake in Al-Haitham’s offering of blood and flesh in order to quell the compulsions born of this wretched curse.
Kaveh, a man most unfortunate and afflicted with a curse, must subsist on human blood and flesh in order to calm the ravening were-beast within. Al-Haitham, a lonesome guardian deity of the forest, offers a contract in exchange for this strange companionship between the two.

“Just because the dormice you gifted me for dinner last night were unexpectedly delicious”—Kaveh caws on, still aggrieved—“it doesn’t mean I'd settle for any plain and ugly stick for the nest! This is why I say you have no appreciation for beauty, Haitham!”
Kaveh’s fastidiousness over the aesthetics of their nest never ceases to puzzle Al-Haitham. What does he mean these aren’t good sticks? Al-Haitham plucked them earlier from a large adhigama tree similar to their own, complete with sprightly leaves, blooming buds, and a bright sheen to its bark—all signs of the tree’s good health.
“Weren’t you the one who once said that functional quality and safety are equally as important as aesthetics?” Al-Haitham retorts with a low ee-chup. “These ugly but sturdy sticks are perfectly serviceable for a durable nest foundation.”
Kaveh and Al-Haitham made for an extremely odd pair in Avidya Forest. After all, whoever heard of a peregrine falcon and a bird-of-paradise sharing a nest together?

“… I’d expected a senior of your repute would have a better sense of decorum. But evidently, some of us are getting much too comfortable with taking advantage of the situation and feeling up an unsuspecting junior.”
“Stop teasing. And like you’re one to talk about decorum, what with that ridiculously thin shirt! At least have some decency—what even is the point of a shirt if I can almost see your nipples through it?!”
Kaveh's hand slips, and Al-Haitham is (naturally) sassy about it.

Caught off guard (and almost, almost flattered) by this sudden praise, Al-Haitham finds himself going down on one knee just as Kaveh passes the bucket of fried chicken towards him, the words leaving his lips before he even realises it: "We're getting married."
Kaveh nearly drops the iced pineapple coffee that Diluc hands to him. Luckily, he only accidentally splashes it all over Diluc's apron instead.
"W-What??" Kaveh splutters in shock, swivelling his head back to where Al-Haitham is still kneeling before him. His crimson gaze widened further when Al-Haitham's expression softens then into the barest of smiles, the resolve in those too-intelligent teal eyes unwavering.
"We're getting married," Al-Haitham says again, this time with conviction, the bucket of fried chicken held up to Kaveh like the most garish of bouquets.
The mission was a resounding success, and what better way to celebrate the night than with a victory meal and a surprise proposal?

Even now, Kaveh could taste the despair from losing his childhood home, the quiet thud of closing his door for the last time, the emptiness that lingered long after. A stinging defeat that wouldn’t go away no matter how much had changed since then.
His wedding wouldn’t be like that. He refused even the possibility.
