she finally stopped kissing her and just took van in, and realized that her smile, the one that had drawn tai in so immediately on the day they met, wasn’t boyish at all. tai had been seeing what she wanted to see, what she felt was more right. if she thought van looked like a boy, it would be easier to get away with calling her beautiful, if only inside her own head. but the closer they got, the more tai could see just how much of a girl van really was. her skin was soft, her lips felt familiar, her body was curved and imperfect and everything tai had ever wanted.

Van is never more focused than when in goal. She tries to pay the same amount of attention in her classes, but inevitably, her mind tends to wander, usually either to the latest vhs she’s gotten her hands on, or to whether or not she might find a moment to pull Tai aside into an empty classroom before practice. But when she’s on the pitch and that whistle blows, nothing distracts her from the game.

Van thinks nothing can distract her during a soccer game, but she doesn’t account for the girl she likes getting knocked on the head. This is incredibly niche but about a decade ago there was a couple who played for the Houston Dash in the NWSL and there is a moment I will never forget where the field player got injured and the goalkeeper rushed all the way to her to make sure she was alright and stayed with her until she was taken off the field. So this is my re-telling but with Taivan.
