Summary
There’s something wrong with Will.
It started three weeks ago, almost four. Will had woken from some sort of nightmare and, instead of seeking comfort in Mike the way he usually would, he’d rolled out a sleeping bag from the closet and chosen to sleep on the floor.
No one believes Mike, except for Joyce. But even she doesn’t understand the full extent to which something is wrong with Will.
Mike understands, though. Mike has been paying attention.

Summary
The anniversary effect is very real; they’ve all felt it. Especially Will, as another shiver racks through him, stronger than the last. This time, Will takes a step closer to Mike and presses their shoulders together. Whether it’s for body heat or comfort, Mike doesn’t know, but he isn’t going to complain.
If he can’t protect Will from the horrible memories and sleepless nights, he can at least protect him from the autumn breeze. He quickly tugs off his leather jacket and holds it out for Will to take, who looks down at it in surprise.
“What?” he asks, glancing between it and Mike, like he doesn’t know what to do with it.
“You’re cold,” Mike states, no room for question. He knows that Will would lie about it if he could.

Summary
The invisible shoulder nudges him, and Mike wishes he'd taken the piece of paper to read what Will would've actually said, and then misses, more generally, Will's voice. His spoken word. Which is unfair - Mike's lucky he gets even this much, the cool brush on his arm, the creaks of his weight on the floorboards, the gentle drum of his fingers. Reminders. Will, inasmuch as he can be, is here, even if it will never feel like enough.
Sometimes — he never tells anyone this — he shuts his eyes, tells himself that Will is alive, and sitting there, next to him, and the moment he tilted his head, they'd be face to face.
He doesn't like opening his eyes, after that.
Will is a ghost. Mike is haunted.

“I just can’t believe they’re fighting,” Lucas muses with a sigh.
“This is a bad one,” El emphasizes. “They fought in California too, but it wasn’t like this.”
“In the ten years I’ve known them, I’ve never once seen them sit more than six inches away from each other. This is worse than the summer of ‘85.”

Will doesn’t have anything to lose anymore, and Mike can’t lose him. The two go hurtling towards an inevitable precipice where the only option might be to go tumbling down together, limbs grappling for each other, flesh melding, and heartbeats syncing in time.

Summary
As they’ve told him a hundred times, Lucas and Dustin are totally fine with Will being gay. It's not a problem at all, there's nothing weird about it! They're super cool with it.
They're very insistent about how cool with it they are to the point where Will is starting to wonder if it's him or themselves that they're trying to convince, and that actually, they might not be that cool with it after all.Nothing about Will’s behaviour has changed; he’s exactly the same as he always was. But ever since he sat his friends down and told them that he’s gay, things have been different. They see him as different.

“Hi,” Will blurts out before he can stop himself, and he can feel his cheeks heat up in embarrassment so quickly it must be unhealthy somehow. “Uh -“
The guy shuts his phone off and reaches up to his ear to pull out an earbud. He shoots Will a grin, which does not help the whole blushing-crimson thing. “Hey,” he says coolly, and Will admires his composure while he wills the earth to collapse beneath him.
The guy quirks an eyebrow at Will when he doesn’t look away, then seems to take in his slightly disheveled and paint-stained appearance - he’d had his painting and drawing class just before he’d gone home, and had managed, as he always does, to get paint everywhere - because his smile grows a little softer, a little fonder. His shoulders relax against the bench, and Will lets out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. “You get sexiled?”

“I love you,” Mike mumbles sleepily into his hair, wriggling closer. His arm winds across Will’s stomach, and Will feels the ghost of a kiss being pressed to the junction of his shoulder and neck.
Will blinks his eyes open, warmth flooding the length of his body. He shifts, twisting around to peer up at Mike, squinting. “You- what?” he murmurs, lifting an eyebrow, and Mike jolts up, peeking over his shoulder sheepishly.
“Oh,” he says, blushing as Will nudges his way to roll over onto his back, Mike hovering over him. “Sorry, I thought you were asleep.”
Will stares up at him. “You were gonna say you loved me for the first time while I was asleep?”
Mike lets out an undignified squeak, and drops his head down onto Will’s shoulder. “No.”

A confused look forms on Will’s face, and he sits up, crossing his legs and looking at Mike curiously. “Yeah… of course,” he says, his voice just as soft. “Anything.”
Mike swallows the lump in his throat, and he sits up too, carefully taking Will’s hands in his own. “Promise we’ll make it out of here,” he says quietly. “That… we’ll get out of Hawkins and away from… from everyone who’s made us feel different. And that… that we’ll always be best friends… and that someday, we’ll get out of this place together.”

Summary
Now that Will’s sitting and Mike’s the one that’s standing, he looks impossibly tall. Tall and lanky, and huge. He should sit back down, Will thinks, lay back down next to Will and stay in their own secluded little bubble.
“I really want to kiss you,” Mike says, and Will’s eyes snap back up to his so violently he thinks he hears his own neck crack with the force of it.
“Don’t,” Will croaks, before his brain has even processed the words. “Don’t say that.”
“Okay,” Mike says easily, still staring. And what the actual fuck is going on? Is Will hallucinating? Is the weed making him hallucinate? “So sausage and pepperoni?”
Will stares dumbly at him. “Um - yeah. Yes.”
“Cool,” Mike replies and then just turns around and leaves Will sitting dumbly in his own room.

“Okay,” Will says, and throws the door open. “Surprise!”
Mike opens his eyes. Then–
“Will,” he says, and it comes out a bit strangled. “Is that a puppy?”
This is a bit of a stupid question. Mike isn’t dumb. He knows what a puppy looks like. The thing in Will’s hands– a little wrinkled and brown and very covered in fur– is definitely a puppy.
Will brings home a dog. It goes about as well as expected.

Will looks up from the spot he was looking at on the floor. “What? I can?”
“Stay at my house tonight.”
Will plays with his own fingers. He’s always fiddling with his own fingers, touching his hands. Mike can't stop looking at them. “What? Mike, why? I’ll be okay here.”
“It’s just one night,” Mike says, a little loudly, a little desperate.
“Okay,” Will replies, a little loudly, also a little desperate, a little too fast like he had been meaning to say yes the entire time. “Yeah… Yeah, I’ll stay over.”
And now they are here. Both sitting on Mike’s bed, with the most crushing tension hanging over them. Mike wants to die in it.
