Brock Rumlow blinked, caught off guard from where he was standing in the middle of Steve’s doorway. He was looking at Bucky like he was seeing a ghost.
Steve was oblivious. “Bucky, this is Brock. He works with me at SHIELD. Brock… I assume you know who he is.”
Bucky grinned sharklike from his place at the kitchen table. He even went as far as to wave his metal fingers at Brock. He hoped the violence playing out in his mind wasn’t as visible to Steve as it was to Brock.
“You’re… Bucky Barnes.”

Much later Brock Rumlow sat in his chair in his crappy SHIELD apartment and wanted to scream.
Steve Rogers introducing them to each other, what a laugh. As if Brock didn’t know.
He was hit with a thought. Steve Rogers didn’t know who was in his apartment. Cause that certainly was not his old pal, his buddy, his Bucky.
That was the Winter Soldier playing house.

Hi again,
It’s me,
Oh God, Will thought desperately. What was he doing? He glanced at the stack of letters piled high next to his right elbow. Each addressed and labeled to the person they were meant to go to. He’d put off Mike’s for last, rightfully assuming that he’d have the most to say to him. And Will did. There was so much he wanted to tell him. Things he’d always ached to confess. Last summer he’d almost overflowed with words. Now he just felt empty. Resigned.
What did he think was going to happen? He’d stamp a heart in the corner of the envelope and say; “surprise, I’m in love with you.” Even if by some chance Mike still wanted to be friends, Will would be long gone.
He set his pen to the paper again.

Mike looked at him unimpressed. “See you say that. You say that. But you never actually mean it.” He flung his hands out, gesturing at him. “You’re always making stupid promises that you can’t keep.”
Will gaped at him. This was ludicrous. “Name one promise that I haven’t kept!”
“You keep leaving!” Mike burst out. He practically shouted it. If the outburst took him by surprise, he didn’t show it. “Everytime I just get you back you end up leaving again. And it was fine at first, I guess. With the Upside Down and the MindFlayer. Like at least then we knew how to bring you back. But now there’s nothing taking you away but you still aren’t here. And I can’t figure out why. I’ve racked my brain trying to understand what’s going on with you but I just don’t get it! We’re supposed to be best friends but lately it’s only felt like that on my side of things.”
____The Upside Down is gone. Or so everyone keeps telling him. But Will knows the truth. You can burn all the vines and close all the gates. But you can’t flush out a virus once it’s already been spread. After all, how do you kill something that’s intertwined with the very root of Hawkins without affecting the real world?

“I can see just fine,” Will snaps. He doesn’t even want to have this conversation with Mike in the first place. If he did, it would’ve been a long time ago. “Why do you even care?”
“Why do I—” Mike splutters. “Because I care, Will! I care about you.”
Honestly — what was Mike expecting? That the past month didn’t happen? That they aren’t being weird again? The end of a literal apocalypse did more harm to their friendship than good, apparently, and it’s not something either of them can ignore.

The world is no longer ending. Half of them have moved into the WSQK. Max is learning how to walk again, Mike is hanging out with Robin Buckley, of all people, and Will—
