A/N: Okay friends here we go. This is an AU fic where Azzi plays for Oregon and Paige plays for UConn. They're the same draft class. I've set it up so it could be a series, but may not add to it until my other series is done. So here's 10K words about how it all began with the two of them. Eventually will get into the college season and inevitably the W and Unrivaled but I saw a tweet that said Heated Unrivalry so I co-opted it. Basically Pazzi x Heated Rivalry vibes. Azzi arrives in Portland with no roots in the city, missing her teammates in Storrs and her family. She decides to make her way to Powell's bookstore to procrastinate her unpacking, only to stumble into a media event featuring Portland Thorns' goalkeeper Paige Bueckers.
With the Fire and the Thorns set to share a brand new facility, Azzi and Paige's paths keep crossing. It's clear to everyone that their chemistry is undeniable. What starts as a random encounter in a bookstore quickly becomes something impossible to ignore, as the two athletes rise to stardom in their sports and shared city while falling completely in love with one another.

Ants can lift up to fifty times their body weight. Carina had learned that when she was around four or five year old. She used to kneel on the ground near the old orange tree in her nonno’s field and just stare at them, sometimes for hours at a time.
When Andrea died, oddly enough, Carina thought of the ants. He was heavy, when the paramedics lifted him up and into the ambulance. Humans aren’t able to carry as much as ants. Ironically, an average person can barely lift their own weight. Carina would have lifted his. She would’ve carried him on her back, she would’ve done it for hours, long after her legs cramped, long after the voices had quieted down. She would’ve carried him.

Carina had, until today, thought she wouldn’t be able to carry more than her own body weight, plus Andrea’s. Until, that is, a roof fell on her wife, and she was met with the real possibility that she would have to carry hers, too.or the mandatory maya gets hurt on the job fic. im so sorry.
