Summary
A year ago, Buck had been diagnosed with cancer and they had done everything possible to push it into remission.
Today, Buck and Eddie are in Buck’s oncologist’s office, waiting to receive Buck’s labs. The doctor comes in, they go through all the test results, then finally she apologizes and says that the cancer markers are not where they would like them to be and they’re going to need to schedule Buck for another round of chemo and radiotherapy.

Post-lawsuit
Buck's back on shift but still on the outs with the team. The flu sweeps its way through the firehouse, Bobby, Hen, Chim and Eddie had all gotten it. Buck’s honestly surprised he’s lasted this long, especially considering he’s been on clean up duty the entire time, every tissue the team had coughed or blown their nose into, every surface they’d sneezed on, had been meticulously discarded, cleaned and sanitized by Buck.
Buck wakes up and realizes that there’s no way he’s making it in today. He’d felt off, maybe even bad the last 2 days, but today he felt like absolute shit on a cracker. Buck calls Bobby and tries to tell him that he’s too sick to come in but Bobby won’t hear of it. Bobby tells Buck to get his shit together and tells him that he can either come in to shift today or be written up for going AWOL and be fired.--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chris and Buck convince Eddie that Chris will be safe if they go surfing, Eddie (against his better judgment agrees).
They have a good time at the beach, until Buck catches the wave at a bad angle and his whole board flips. Buck wraps Chris up in his arms immediately, his only thought, protecting their son.Buck isn’t able to get his bearings with Chris in his arms and ends up getting smacked in the head when a wave picks up his board and pushes it towards his head. He’s stunned, and goes under, both him and Chris both get a lungful of sea water each.

Buck bolts out of the station immediately to go pick Theo up.It turns out, the teachers had brought out a Mother’s Day craft for the kids to do after lunch and Theo had realised that he didn’t have anyone to make his craft for.
Buck is going to have to learn how to support his kid as he grieves. Eddie brings Christopher, who unfortunately has some experience, to help.

They’re in bed together at night, Eddie offered to take the couch, not wanting Buck to catch this but Buck refused to kick Eddie out of bed when he was sick, besides they’d already slept together the night before, the damage was probably already done.
