Summary
Lena is hardly two steps into Kara’s apartment before she’s immediately assaulted by the knowledge that this was a bad idea.
She’s not really sure how she decided this was even a decent idea in the first place. Breaking into Kara’s apartment — even if it is using the key that Kara gave her — was only barely justifiable in the first place. She knows her excuses are flimsy. Kara would be perfectly willing to find and return the flash drive Lena had left in her apartment, maybe even generous enough to return the sweatshirt she keeps in Kara’s apartment for when she gets cold during movie nights (though somehow Lena always ended up wearing one of Kara’s sweatshirts instead). Kara would probably even leave those items outside Lena’s door if she asked. Kara’s always been a giving person. Lena doubts that quality would change even if the two of them haven’t spoken in weeks.
Thin as her excuse is, she wouldn’t have ever guessed that this is what she would walk into.

The woman, who up to this point had been one of the ones scrolling through her phone, looks up suddenly and meets her gaze. Kara feels suspended in the air when keen eyes bore into her and she seriously wonders if anybody’s ever looked at her before until now.

She could cry (and she was not very confident she hadn’t already), but she stopped herself as the words I can't look at you anymore without my heart breaking rang in her mind. Instead, she simply shrugged, even as her heart broke at seeing the warmth in Lena’s eyes directed at her again for the first time. “What was there to tell?”
“You told the DEO not to ask for my help. Why not?”
