“It’s not pathetic,” Will interjects quickly, shaking his head, “It’s not—“
“It is, Will,” he hears Mike’s voice break over another hitched breath, “I know you’re… I just want you to be happy. I never want you to come back to Hawkins, but I’m fucking selfish. I’m so selfish, and I’m sorry.”
Will lets the tears spill over and he lets that want that’s always itching under his skin show itself.
“My whole life I’ve missed you every second you’ve been away from me,” Will confesses quietly into the receiver.
If you’re pathetic, I’m wretched.

Not long after the final battle, Mike and Will were inseparable– until Will moved out to New York.
Despite the weekly calls and the freedom of living their lives without terror, there’s no world in which they could last so long apart without it feeling like torture.
Will gets a call, and three days later, Mike is at his doorstep.
It only takes a day for them to fall back together again.

He tried to think of something else—literally, anything else. Puppies. Nancy. His grandma. That weird version of the Mind Flayer they fought at Starcourt Mall that was just a goopy flesh monster made up of rats and bodies.
It wasn't working. The image of Dream Will hovering over him—eyes glazed over, coming undone—was burned into his retinas, sitting at the top of his fucking Archive of Jerking Off Material with a bright orange sticker that read NEW RELEASE FT. YOUR BEST FRIEND LOOKING TOTALLY FUCKABLE.

Mike Wheeler has been spending a lot of time in his dreams lately—more specifically, wet dreams about Will Byers—ever since he discovered he has the ability to become lucid in them. He is so totally normal about it and not spiraling out of control.

Summary
Mike is waiting for Will in the basement, a look of suspicious, nervous excitement on his face. He cleared the table and laid out upon it are two card games.
"Now, I know you’ll resist," Mike blurts out, stepping toward him. "But I think this will be good. For both of us! For when we... you know,” Mike trails off, “When we get partners.”
Will scoffs, stepping closer to inspect the titles.
Spill or Sip and Truth, Dare, or Strip.
Or: Mike suggests a spicy card game to help Will loosen up before college. It works a little too well, and suddenly they’re gambling with unresolved feelings, and clothes, that were meant to stay in place.

Summary
“Why? Why won’t you ever tell me what’s wrong with you?” Carlton’s voice is filled with frustration, and it sounds like nails on a chalkboard to Will.
What is wrong with him. It’s such a loaded question. Why does Will wake up screaming sometimes? Why can’t Will handle the cold? Why are there days when Carlton’s hands on him feel like being kept under water with no way up?
And why can’t Will tell Carlton the truth? How could Will possibly explain it without sounding insane? What is the human translation for being taken and kept in another dimension, violated, and possessed, only to then be violated yet again—
This part of him is something Will is never going to be able to share with anyone else. That nobody would understand.
Why won’t you tell me what’s wrong with you.
“Because you wouldn’t get it.” Will somehow manages to say it without gagging.
And then, Carlton goes in for the kill.
“Oh, but Mike does?”

After leaving Hawkins to go to college in the great city of San Franscisco, Will finally finds someone who loves him. The only problem is that the only person in the world who knows him, is someone else.
