When Prince Arthur appointed a second knight, João, Abel wondered if the man wished him ill. Why else would he be lumped with his perfect foil; a mischeivous flirt incapable of silence?
Day in day out João was there. Seasons passed and he became Abel's norm. Once-quiet nights were filled with João's chatter, same with guard duty in draughty corridors, and as the days blurred so too did feelings.
The prince-sent curse became a man worth working alongside. Someone Abel would notice, even miss, if he were gone.

Gabriel umm’d and ahh’d over whether or not to write anything, twirling his prized pendant around his neck between his fingers. He was deciding if he had anything worth adding—but even the shortest thing would help, he reminded himself, so he took a slow breath in and put pencil to old paper.

It’s not that Portugal fears being replaced or forgotten. The bond he shares with England runs much too deep: there is nothing that could permanently sever their ties, as history has proven again and again. But it’s the idea that England is giving a part of himself to someone else, the idea that Portugal is no longer the first one he turns to, becoming instead a mere afterthought in the face of shiny, new alliances.
Thus, every now and then, he finds himself glaring across the Atlantic.

It feels hopeless, sometimes, for João, who would need the entire district’s hands to count the clients he’s slept with. But just as plants can rise through the smallest cracks in concrete, so too can some good come to those of the Night.
