Summary
Lan Wangji has no idea why he is accompanying Wei Wuxian part of the way back to Yunmeng. These are starting to look like troubling times, he supposes, considering the rising conflict with the Wen clan, but he has learned very well lately that Wei Wuxian is a highly accomplished and skilled cultivator – no matter how much Wei Wuxian likes to present himself like an easy-going, uncultured, almost unmannered youngster who plays pranks on Lan Wangji and bothers him with a million things. But oh, all those little things with which he nags Lan Wangji… maybe they do actually impress him.
Or: On a hot, hot summer day when they are seventeen, one thing leads to another and Lan Wangji finds himself tumbling around with Wei Wuxian in the green grass somewhere en route to Yunmeng, only mother nature watching them lose any restraint – and that more than once.

Some of them think that they are promising mates and others do not. Nie Huaisang has heard them argue during breaks about why or why not. When he’s assigned to the two of them, he takes the opportunity. He can figure this out, he swears. He’s the perfect man for the job.
OR
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are hybrids raised in a care facility. Nie Huaisang is in charge of their study, observing them to see whether or not they will become mates and actually mate. Things do not go as planned. But it doesn't mean they don't go well.
