"Paths that lead away from extinction, you four-eyed imbecile," Lex rubs his eyes, irritated, pinches the bridge of his nose, then refocuses bitterly on the article. He glares at the name Clark Kent, which appears at the top of his screen. "Idiot. Unbelievable, hopelessly optimistic...for god's sake, notice the article's called What Makes A Human? not What Makes a Neanderthal? One's hopelessly extinct to make way for the other, you..."
His griping trails off to embittered murmuring. He can no longer resist the article’s interminable pull and returns at once to his reading.

Lex Luthor thinks of life as a game of chess. Everyone around him are pieces to be moved, manipulated, controlled. He thinks through every move ten times before he makes it. Every piece's worth is considered carefully, and reevaluated when necessary. Now, Clark Kent, the reporter who keeps managing to interview Superman, might just be the most useful piece on the board.
