How was anyone to know that there was a type of kryptonite that would cause any kryptonian it came in contact with to slowly lose their memories, most recent first. By the time the justice gang had dispatched the villain, Clark had lost the last five years of his life, taking him back to right after Lex was arrested and the city was almost torn apart.

“No one calls it that,” Flag snapped. “And if they do, they’ll be filling out triple the paperwork.”
“What’s the directive, General?” Diana asked.
“Simple,” Flag said. “Luthor needs oversight. A.R.G.U.S. decided it should come from one of you.”
Hal smirked. “You mean us—the League?”
Flag shook his head. “No. I mean him.”

However, it would be done by his past self, who was on a quest to kill his husband, the one and only Clark Kent/Superman, or as the past self knew him to be Superman, he knew that he would die protecting Superman.
