“Your music," Jon says. "Would you mind turning it down?”
“My…oh!” Martin sets his mug down on some out of sight table and hurries away. Jon watches his back until that, too, is out of sight. In a moment, the music has fallen to a much more bearable level. In another, Martin has returned to the door.
“I’m so sorry,” he says, taking his drink back in hand. Shaking hand. His hand is shaking. Hard enough, in fact, Jon’s surprised its contents aren’t splashing over the sides. He’s smiling, too, a nervous little thing that Jon thinks might vanish if he makes any sudden movements. He raises his mug as though to offer it over. “Make it up to you with some cocoa?"
Or: sometimes the real Christmas is the cute neighbor Jon kissed along the way.

It was the perfect shot, lined up just right—or it would have been if Martin hadn’t stepped forward at that exact moment, too preoccupied with making sure he didn’t spill any of Jon’s tea to notice Sasha’s makeshift weapon.
Most of the paper clips crashed harmlessly into the sleeve of Martin’s jumper, but one solitary, misguided soldier, bright pink and separated from its brethren, soared above the others and splashed into the mug with a solemn plink, sinking into the depths of Jon’s tea.
Martin froze, staring dumbfounded at the cup in his hands.
Tim and Sasha engage in battle. Martin is determined to protect Jon and his dignity from the fallout, risking humiliation and his sanity.

“I guess that’s why it really bothers me, you know? I try, but I can’t… actually imagine ever making a decision that I knew meant losing you.” It sounds like a dig, even if it isn’t meant as one. He decides it’s okay to let it be hurtful, just a little, because it’s true. “I promised that first. I promised forever. I filed and waited and signed on the line. Better, worse, till death do us part.”
Jon does scoff this time, the cruel echo calling back to them through the tunnel. “You know I didn’t mean - ”
“Then you shouldn’t have said it.”

It shouldn’t have been surprising to learn that Martin hated him. He had been, he knew, a truly terrible boss - he’d treated Martin horribly, caused him to lose his home, nearly gotten him killed. Really, it had been ridiculous to ever think that Martin wouldn’t hate him.
Still, Jon had been trying, in his own way, to make it up to him. There wasn’t exactly a card at the drugstore that said, “I’m sorry I berated you for six months and caused you to nearly be eaten by a swarm of worms of potentially supernatural origin,” but he’d been trying. He brought Martin breakfast every morning, made sure the breakroom cabinets were stocked with his favorite blends of tea, and had tried to work some genuine praise into his feedback of Martin’s work. None of it was the direct apology that his conscience told him he really ought to give, but Martin had appreciated it. Or seemed to, anyway.
Jon wasn’t certain what motivated the decision he made next - whether it was guilt or spite or something else. He could, he knew, be quite petty when the situation called for it. Either way, he made up his mind then and there to prove Martin wrong. He was going to be the best fake boyfriend he could be.

“Lonely,” Jon finished for him.
“Yeah.” Martin raised the damp towel to Jon’s forehead. Gentler this time, he began to wipe away the blood and grime. “But if you think no one will care if you get hurt, then you’re wrong.”
Jon lifted his hand as though to hold Martin’s hand in place, then thought better of it and lowered it into his lap. “Right.”
“And if you go back into that coffin, I’m climbing in after you and pulling you back out.”
Jon glanced up, the ghost of a smile playing on his lips. He looked small, and frail, and so, so tired. Martin could feel his carefully-curated numbness slip away as his heart clenched at the sight.
“When was the last time you ate?” he asked. Old habits die hard.
“I-I don’t know. It didn’t matter so much, in the Buried.”
“Well, you’re not in the Buried anymore. C’mon.”
When Jon gets out of the Buried, he and Martin have a talk.

Martin had never really had recurring dreams. There were a few broad genres that he encountered with some frequency: teeth-falling-out dreams and didn’t-study-for-a-test dreams and dreams and being-out-in-public-and-suddenly-realizing-he-wasn’t-wearing-any-clothes dreams. But nothing like this.
They were all connected, he was fairly sure of that. There seemed to be some overarching throughline weaving all the dreams together, but he could never hold the details in his head once he woke up. They existed mostly as hazy, disconnected images: worms and fog and tape recorders, and rooms lined with shelves and shelves of file boxes. And the man from the library. He was always there.
Martin’s life is going well. He’s got a decent job, a good flat, and he’s finally saved up enough to head back to school and get his degree.
If only he could stop having those recurring dreams where he’s either kissing or stabbing the cute guy with all the scars who works at the library.
