Wonderstruck, Zhou Zishu draws a gentle hand down Wen Kexing’s throat, holding him in place. Wen Kexing does nothing more than exhale softly, lips parted, docile and desire-flushed in his grasp.
“You’re insane,” Zhou Zishu says, his voice rough-edged and breathless. It sounds dangerously close to praise.

“So, what brings you to Gusu? Business with the Lans?”
“No, not business. I have an old friend in Cloud Recesses. A very good friend.” Wei Wuxian paused, marshalling his thoughts. “The last time I visited, I…” His thoughts were proving harder to marshall than he thought, twisting and slipping away from long avoided scrutiny. “I behaved foolishly. Which isn’t like me at all.” Wei Wuxian laughed unconvincingly. “Then, and this very much is like me, I just…left.”
“Ah, well. Not to worry. The Lans are good people. I’m sure you’ll have no bother working it out, especially with a good friend. Good friends forgive us our mistakes. Now, will there be anything else?”
Wei Wuxian shook his head and kept staring at his drink as the innkeeper moved away. He drank the whole cup abruptly, closing his eyes against the sting of liquor and keeping them closed. Good friends forgive us our mistakes, the innkeeper had said. They certainly do, thought Wei Wuxian. And they just keep on forgiving.
He sat and watched the fire for a long time.
