Caitlyn panicked, feeling extraordinarily unprepared having been thrust into her new position without so much as even a handbook to consult. What were the formalities? What was she supposed to respond with? Where was the damn push to talk button…
“Hellooo? I said Houston, do you copy?”
Caitlyn fiddled with her headset, having finally found the green button on the side and hastily letting out a rather breathless reply. “Um, yes. Hello? This is Houston. I copy.”
There was a long pause in which Caitlyn sat twiddling her thumbs, anxiety pushing the frantic pulse of her heartbeat through her eardrums. Was that wrong? Did she already fuck up? She took a steady deep breath, finger hovering over the talk button until the familiar voice of the astronaut came through her headset once more.
“Damn, Houston. I didn’t expect you to sound so sexy.”
OR
Caitlyn has been assigned as the personal capcom to one of the astronauts currently on a year long expedition at the international space station. Cue long months of pining and desperate longing.

“But I could... show you.” It sounds dumber coming out than it did in her head, and her voice is quiet and rough from the smoke and the nerves. It is a terrible idea. She watches Dina closely for her imminent refusal.

“Your heart…” she murmurs, eyebrows furrowing. “S’fast.”
Ellie’s having trouble processing Dina’s words, too distracted by the heat of her skin, the comforting pressure of Dina’s weight, her smell more intoxicating than the whiskey. Dina shifts, propping herself up with one elbow as she stares down at Ellie, face open and curious.
“Do I make you nervous?” she muses, words a little slurred as she moves her hand to brush Ellie’s cheek, tucking a stray piece of hair behind her ear.
“Yes.” The whispered word is out of Ellie’s mouth before she even realizes what she’s saying, and she gulps.

A drunk mind speaks a sober heart. Ellie and Dina learn that particular lesson the hard way.

She’d seen mountains, deserts, snowy valleys. Rivers and oceans, and lakes so large they might as well be oceans. The wide-open plains, with herds of bison roaming freely, skies that carried on forever.
But, sure as the sun rises in the east, civilization had started to push further and further west. Railroads were being constructed, their lines encroaching into the wilds. Telegraph wires started to line the horizon, growing so thick in some cities that it felt like they could block out the sun.
A small mountain town had seemed like a good bet.
