There are a few things in life that are irrefutable truths of the universe. One is that the moon is essential in pulling and pushing the tide. Another is that there is no tangible way to count all of the stars in the sky. The last, and arguably most important is that Shane Hollander completely, absolutely, without a doubt, hates Ilya Rozanov.
Fated to hate each other from the very first moment they met, at the University of Toronto’s 2016 Young Athletes Summit, and the arrogant fuck had told Shane he was too short to be a ‘real athlete’.
“Is cute,” He’d said, with that infuriating smirk on his annoyingly full lips. “Maybe five seven is new six foot.”
It had left Shane with a rage he hadn’t felt… well ever. The urge to punch the smugness off his face, to bite back with something equally as cutting. Instead, he was flustered and thrown, only managing an indignant, “Oh fuck off, Rozanov.”

Ilya takes a step closer. “You would totally hate that, so why ask for it?”
All of a sudden, Shane’s defensive posture deflates. He makes himself small under Ilya’s hard gaze. His frown disappears, and his elegant cheeks flush a deep shade of red. He avoids Ilya’s eyes like the plague, and his throat visibly struggles to swallow.
It lasts five seconds before Shane tries to pull himself together, but it’s too late. Ilya catches it immediately, and his annoyance vanishes.
Realization hits him like a motherfucking truck in the middle of the road.
“Oh my god, Hollander.” Ilya’s voice is flirty and teasing. He tries not to smirk like a Cheshire cat, but he can’t help it. His cheeks hurt from the enormous, unapologetic smile. “You would totally love it. Right?”

“Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”
“Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.
“Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”
This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends.
It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.
