    Summary

Steve and Eddie were sitting back-to-back on the rug, their faces set into grim lines of displeasure, glaring at the opposing walls as though the choice of wallpaper was complicit in the global discontinuation of Farah Fawcett spray and eradication of the heavy metal genre.

Dustin said, "They had a fight," without looking up from his comic.

Max flit her eyes down, from their faces to their hands. Their fingers were interlocked, Steve tracing the patterns in silver rings, and Eddie rubbing circles into the back of Steve's hand.

    "They're holding hands."

"They get sad when they fight," was his nonplussed response, as if that were a complete and perfectly acceptable explanation for the scene, which—

    Yeah. It kind of is.

Or, Steve & Eddie have a bad habit of breaking up at the slightest misdemeanour.

    Summary

    “I fucked up.”

Wayne takes a seat in his recliner but leans forward, full attention. It’s not that he wholly doubts that his nephew could, maybe very well has fucked up, he just highly doubts that’s not a particularly dramatic and probably inaccurate way of phrasing it.

Also? If Wayne’s picked up anything about the relationship Eddie’s built over more than a year, now, it’s that it’s one of odd but undeniable equals. Adults, who squabble and shout and sometimes storm out but usually only because they recognize the need to step away, take some air. Adults who disagree, sometimes in big loud ways, but still don’t spend their nights alone.

    Almost ever.

So: whatever the fuck up is? Wayne’s…just not too concerned.

    “How’s that?”

Eddie’s eyes flick up from what he’s reading, not even scared. More…ashamed.

    Devastated, and ashamed.

So Wayne pays extra close attention when Eddie shakes his reading material, oh: a calendar. The calendar. With all the anniversaries on every goddamn day.

Eddie tosses the calendar on the table and moans, despondent:

    “I missed one.”

    -

In which Eddie misses an anniversary. But…does he really?

    Summary

Wayne Munson’s lived his life mostly free from the hubbub of small town gossip. Some was unavoidable in his tiny holler as a boy; more was part and parcel to the service, and plain keeping half-sane in war, but the point of the matter is this: he don’t mean to collect any of the latest scuttlebutt on his way just to town after he gets off his shift just past 5, where the diner's got a better cup-o-joe than the sludge he gets on the floor.

And honest: he don’t think that’s more than he’s earned the right to ask.

But it is more than he bargained for signin’ up to, when he sees the only other people in the diner at this hour on a Saturday.

    -

Or: Wayne maybe sees his nephew's boy with a lady friend at the diner one innocuous weekend morning, and he maybe overhears some concerning words shared between the two of them—he can't be blamed for being unable to turn off his own ears.

It could be argued, however, that he can be blamed for the conclusions he draws as a result, and for the handwringing that follows. He was raised better than to countenance idle gossip, after all.
