Athena startled when the first spark of light materialized in the middle of her cupped palms.
It sputtered out quickly, as the very first spell by an anxious first-year was wont to do, but after she held her breath and squared her shoulders and pressed her knees firmly to the ground, the spark reignited, dyeing her palms electric yellow. Her eyes widened as the tiny budding spark elongated into a jagged eel of lightning, dancing slowly between her hands as it built up in speed. The static tickled her skin; it didn’t hurt her like she thought it would, like Apollo, her jerk of an upperclassman, had said it would.
If anything, it felt good, like a ribbon of sunshine twined between her fingers. Athena moved one of her hands and watched, dazzled, as the skein of lightning moved with it, bounding between the pads of her fingers, kissing the knuckles on her other hand between each jump. She could practically feel the static radiating in her eyes from just how wide they were.A renowned, magical academy. An excited first-year student. A secret slinking beneath the school's surface... and a few professors looking for answers.

Edward WISHED he could remember what had happened to them. The last clear memory he had was of him trudging after Mustang as he strode into their shared hotel room, documents in hand and trying to tempt Edward with the idea of a spaghetti dinner at the nearby dinner with the promise of letting him have whatever dessert he wanted when his memory grew hazy, like a dream he was trying too hard to remember.
Mustang was still breathing, deep, regular breaths, which was the only solace that Edward could take that he wasn’t near death because he wouldn’t freaking wake up. He really hoped that whatever they had been given, liquid or otherwise, wasn’t fatal, because with his automail out of commission, Edward depended on the bastard to escape their makeshift prison.
And maybe because he was just a little bit worried about him. Just a little. The tiniest, smallest amount of worry.

Summary
Though she’ll never say it to Ema, sometimes it feels like she’s suffocating. Life easily slipped into a numb routine; the same cycle of raising her sister, work, and school that hammers into her over and over–until everything is a reprieve from something else and there’s hardly a moment to rest between it all. It wears her thin, pulls every thread taut until it snaps and she’s left with less of herself than she had before. Lana throws herself into everything fully, never offers a concession to any part of her life, and still can’t help but wonder if she’s giving enough.
In the wake of their parents' deaths, Lana steps up to raise her little sister. Between work, school, and judgement from family, she isn't sure she's doing enough to be what Ema needs.
