But the thing is, no matter how adorable she is when she worries her lip or scrunches her nose, he cannot get past Amy continuously bringing up her partner, Jake Peralta.
Dave doesn’t think it’s a conscious act, on her part, but the guy's just constantly featured in her stories—sometimes as a passerby, but more often than not, he’s the one driving the weird, off-the-wall action—or she’ll just mention him in a passing comment, like when she’s talking about her new car and how she had to dump his powdered donuts out of the window because who in their right mind would eat powdered donuts they just found underneath their bed?

When they’re lying in bed, watching a documentary about scorpions of all things—it actually didn’t take much convincing on his part, because, really, he’ll do anything to make Amy happy—he’ll lay his head against her chest, and she’ll be gently stroking his hair, her fingers working through the short tufts and every so often, in between the British narrator’s quips and images of the arachnids, she’ll brush her lips against his forehead, against his temples. It seems almost absent-minded, in a way, like this is her natural state: loving him, that is.

The first time Ben Parker meets Tony Stark, he punches him square in the face.
Tony bites back a curse and ignores the way his eyes water as he looks back up at the man. Ben’s not angry, which is part of the reason the punch took him by surprise. They’re lucky the door is closed, or Happy would have tackled him to the ground.
“Did that make you feel better?” Tony asks, the sarcasm in his tone biting, but Ben takes it as a serious question.
“No.” If Tony didn’t know any better, he’d say the man almost cracks a smile. It’s hard to tell, and Tony’s never met a man he can’t read, but Ben doesn’t look angry (seriously, why doesn’t he look angry?), even though that punch felt angry. “...Maybe a little.”

It’s Father’s Day, and Tony never really had a father. Not in the real sense of the word, not in the way that counts.
Peter Parker doesn’t have a father, either. Not anymore, anyway, not since he was little, and the amount of years that have passed since then outweigh the amount of time he got with Richard Parker.
Tony wouldn’t call himself Peter’s dad. He wouldn’t, he doesn’t, he doesn’t think of himself that way, no way, no way.
He stares at himself in the mirror. He pulls down on his cheeks, makes his eyes water. He runs his hands over the roughness of his jaw and sorta hates everything about himself right now, because he’s acting like a goddamn idiot. It’s Father’s Day and he’s not a father. He doesn’t know why the hell he’s pining for something that isn’t his, shouldn’t be his, can never be his. He isn’t a father, he isn’t Peter’s father, so there’s no reason on God’s green earth for Peter and him to do something for Father’s Day.
