"I have just the man for you. One of our master stylists," Percy says. He brings Alex through the main salon area to a small back room with just three chairs and tells him to take a seat. There aren't any windows in here, but it's overflowing with plants and vines in all different shades of green, giving the feel of a secret garden.
Moments later, Alex is faced with a tall, young, blond man who is objectively beautiful, all symmetrical lines and a tight little waist that expands out to a broad chest and shoulders. A man who immediately puts his hands in Alex's hair, brushing strands aside, finger-combing, tugging this way and that. It's really nice, and Alex is feeling some type of way about being touched like this when no one has touched him in months. Years, a small voice in the back of his head pipes up, but he ignores it.
"What are you looking for today, Senator?" His voice is like silk. Alex blinks at the man in the mirror in front of them. He can see nipples peaked through his tight black t-shirt. Fucking hell.
Alex is a newly elected senator. Henry is a much younger hair stylist at Senate Hair Care Services. Everything is going to be...fine.

"No," Alex interjects. "Truth or dare."
"You read my mind, Alexander." Nora turns to open the mini-fridge. "What would everyone like to drink?"
"Henry and I will take vodka if you've got it," Pez says. Henry narrows his eyes at Pez, trying to communicate his alarm, but Pez simply grins back, feral, licking his top teeth.

"I'm Henry," the guy offers. Alex pushes up one rep, then another. The blood is rushing to his face as he powers through more, and seems to be rushing elsewhere as well, because there's undeniable arousal pooling in his groin from the exertion. He struggles slightly for a moment, then, and instead of taking over like Alex expects, his new best friend Henry starts—talking. "That's good, so good. Perfect, can you give me another?"
Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck. Sweat pours down Alex's forehead as he pushes the bar back up off his chest.
"Beautiful, just beautiful. So good for me. There you are, love." Henry helps Alex settle the bar back on the rack, and Alex exhales in a rush, his heart thudding almost painfully against his chest. Fuck.
PUMP Gym is notorious for gay guys cruising, and Alex wants to hook up.

Three weeks before Henry Fox's tour for his fourth, highly anticipated, awards-bait novel A Brief War in December begins, his publicist Janella breaks her foot on a bunny slope at Windham.
Alex can't be mad at her, even though he kind of is. Saying it out loud would be like kicking her when she was down, and she already went down a literal mountain in the worst way possible.
Now crammed in Rafael Luna's corner office, Janella is shooting Alex extremely apologetic looks while slumped on her crutches, wearing a bright orange cast. The conversation about who is going to be joining Henry Fox on his multi-city trek across the U.S. is also going downhill. Alex is feeling the same sort of free fall while standing still.
Because out of all the publicists available in their tiny underfunded department, the only one left to escort their company's best-selling author is regrettably him.
The problem is, well, Alex absolutely hates Henry Fox.
Or: Alex is the publicist for Mountchristen Publishers, and is stuck on a two-week tour with their best-selling, but frustrating, author Henry Fox.

Alex really needed to stop saying things like that. It almost always bit him in the ass, because the last thing he expected when he stepped out onto the deck was an all too familiar pair of shoulders at the other end of the passerelle.
“Henry.” The name left his lips in the same moment that his toe met the step up of the front deck causing him to stumble a few feet along the freshly sprayed down teak and made just enough commotion to grab the attention of the blonde on the dock. Their eyes locked somewhere in the middle, and Alex took in the misty blue that put even these waters to shame before they flicked to the half buttoned linen chambray shirt billowing with the breeze.
A god damn summer dream, if Alex had any way to describe it.

Summary
Wanting Alex’s blood is nothing new. Wanting Alex as a whole is nothing new. But Henry knows that it’s a dead end—one that will most likely lead to his own demise if he allows himself to drift too far into his orbit. No matter how attracted Henry is to him, how much he’s imagined the sweetness of his blood on his tongue, how much he’s envisioned the contrast of Alex’s skin against his bedsheets, it doesn’t change the facts. It doesn’t change who they are.
Henry, born into a role he never asked for, and Alex, born into a bloodline bred to exterminate him.
