Summary
There’s a hand, fingers cold, on his elbow – someone trying to get his attention. Usually, usually, his staff would know that just calling his name is enough, that he’s fine-tuned to the sound of it like a dog waiting for a command. But as he looks down and then to the person the chilled digits belong to, he finds Whitaker staring up at him owlishly. A shudder goes through him, senses zeroing in on the point of contact.
“Can I help you?” It comes out bitchier than he intended, caught off-guard as he is. But he doesn’t take it back, not even when the kid bites at his lower lip as if he wants to apologize.
“I just wanted to ask if you liked the chicken parm.”

With a shaky breath, he lifts the pencil again, his heart thumping. His hand is steadier this time, but the line he draws on the other eye is no better - just as wonky, just as thick, just as smudged.
When he sets the pencil down, for the final time, he steps back and looks at himself.
His smile grows as he tilts his head back and forth, taking in how the eyeliner seems to have transformed his face, his eyes brighter and more defined.

And then time passes and Joaquin gets better. The White House gets rebuilt. The Wakandans gift him another set of wings (“You better not break these again, Wilson,” Okoye says, and her eyes clearly telegraph murder but also fondness). The Red Hulk stages two breakout attempts before the month’s even over.
There’s really quite a lot going on and Sam doesn’t realize he’s avoiding his own thoughts until a random Friday evening, when he’s sitting in on a super top secret Pentagon meeting.

Eddie’s head is still tilted back against the wall, but his gaze is now trained somewhere ahead. Buck exhales with relief, because it’s easier to be this close to Eddie when he’s not looking at Buck. When Eddie looks at him, it’s just … confusing, for his body, and his idiot heart. A hopeless romantic would believe those damn forums where queers admit to realizing they’re queer because they’re in love with their best friend, who happens to be the same gender they are.
Buck may be hopeless, and he may be romantic, but he is not the two put together. He discovered he’s bisexual the normal way—by kissing a man he’s attracted to. A man who is not his best friend.
“Buck,” Eddie says, and Buck’s chest still gets fluttery when Eddie says his name like that, a low rumble settled deep in his chest. Like it’s at home there. He doesn’t say anyone else’s name like that.
