Which like—yeah, Buck’s had this dream. Buck’s definitely had this dream, the one where Eddie realizes that he’s head over heels in love with Buck, and that he wants to spend the rest of his life with him, but it’s never been more than a dream. It’s never been more than—than Buck nodding off on the station couch with Eddie’s feet in his lap and thinking, right before he drifted off, that he’d be happy doing this for the rest of his life.
It wasn’t supposed to be real. If it’s real, if Eddie’s standing across the dining room table from him, one had wrapped around the stem of the wine glasses they’re cleaning, the other flexing on top of the table like he wants to reach out but isn’t sure he can.
And Buck—Buck is standing in a pile of broken glass, and he feels like his heart is beating out of his chest, because Eddie just looked up from his polishing cloth and said I think we should get married.
Buck thinks, absently, that breaking the glass was a pretty valid reaction.

“What do you miss the most about Texas?”
The question takes Eddie by surprise; he and Buck have been staring at his TV screen in silence for the better part of an hour now. They just got off a 24-hour shift, and they’re both dead to the world, but Eddie had mentioned that Chris was sleeping over at a friend’s and he was dreading going home to an empty house, and Buck had followed him home, simple as that.
“Is it the food? I bet the barbecue’s amazing,” Buck muses, pulling a laugh out of Eddie.
“The barbecue is incredible,” Eddie confirms with a nod. “Honestly, though?”
Buck raises an eyebrow, humming to encourage Eddie to go on.
“The bluebonnets.”

“Hey, are you okay?” Eddie asks sharply, and it’s only then that Buck realizes he’s shaking, all of the adrenaline he’d managed to sustain throughout the entire hostage crisis draining out of him in a rush, leaving him weak and cold.
“I’m —” fine, Buck tries to say, but it gets stuck behind the lump in his throat that he can suddenly barely get air past, let alone words. A door slams somewhere behind them and Buck flinches, gunshots echoing through his mind and copper flooding his tongue as the reality of what just transpired crashes over him.
It almost happened again, he thinks wildly. It almost happened again.
