“The surgeon on the La Louise,” Izzy says, putting a hand on top of Edward’s where it’s resting in the crease of Bonnet’s thigh, “had a book. Had some drawings kinda like this in there.”
He clasps at Edward’s fingers one by one, feeling the spiky edges of his thumb ring, the seams of his cut off glove, the stub of his ring finger, shorn down to the last knuckle.
“I’ve got to say, the drawings looked neater.”

Edward had looked bewildered at first, wind tangling his hair, whipping through their wet clothes as they climbed aboard.
“Stede,” he said softly, taking a step forward. “Izzy. You shouldn’t have left.”
“I found him for you, Eddie,” Izzy rasped, and Stede had wanted to say something – it wasn’t like that, they had found each other – but Edward whipped closer, slid a quick gloved hand under Izzy’s chin, forcing his face up.
“You shouldn’t have left.”

Summary
